I bought two red Swirl chairs in May 2014. They were very comfortable and looked perfect for the kitchen. I was very happy with them until March 2015 when the back of one of them suddenly snapped off just above the seat with an almighty crack. The sudden lack of back support meant I tipped over backwards while holding a glass and ended up on the floor. I was very lucky I did not crack my head on a wall or the floor or injure my back or arms in some way - fortunately, all I had was a little whiplash effect in my neck. John Lewis immediately refunded me once I returned the chairs but I noticed two other people have reported the same problem in these reviews. I have no idea if it affects only chairs in red (maybe they have a colourant that affects the material) or is a problem with the design in general but there is clearly a risk and I would therefore not recommend them to anyone.

We purchased four of these chairs in March 2014, which we like very much, but noticed during assembly that the threaded fixings used to secure the seat to the base were very tight when screwed into the sockets on the underside of the plastic seat. In August 2014 we noticed that one of the seats had cracked at one of the sockets probably due to the tight fit. John Lewis kindly arranged an FOC replacement but unfortunately this proved impossible to assemble.
The fit of the fixings into the sockets in the underside of the plastic seat were so tight on this occasion that they could not be screwed in without fear of cracking the plastic - so tight indeed that attempting to screw a fixing into one of the sockets even loosened the socket in the plastic which therefore made it totally unusable.
John Lewis have now kindly volunteered to send another replacement and deliver it to us fully assembled. We hope that his one will be acceptable!
PS: Five stars to JL for service

Originally intended to buy 'Gel' chairs simply because of the variety of colours, quickly changed my mind when I spotted 4 ex display Swirl chairs. Purchased two blue and two smoke, set against my glass table, they really look the business I'm so pleased with them, the broader seat and comfy back gives good support. My chairs were delivered assembled, there are however useful comments elsewhere so don't let that disuade you. If pushed I would now be prepared to buy at full price they are that good, go on make yourself happy and enjoy them!

Comfortable to sit on, easy to clean when the gran children have been round. Equally stylish for dinner parties.

2 weeks ago I bought 4 of these chairs as they looked really good and were very comfortable. Having read the reviews we had no trouble assembling them, though it seemed straightforward to tighten all bolts evenly. I had even warned my teenagers not to tip them on to 2 legs.
Then today out of the blue one chair leg sheared off, I assumed the frame was steel and strong but this does not appear to be the case. I now wonder how long the other chairs will last. I spent a lot of money on what I thought to be a good product from a reputable source and am now very disappointed.
I expected more than 2 weeks use out of a chair of that price.

This chair is really comfortable. The only problem I experienced was being able to really tighten the bolts on the underside but will check them in the near future. The chairs are fine on a wooden floor and look great with a glass table.

These chairs look beautiful but regrettably, after only one year's use the perspex seat on one of the chairs has sheared off from the base.

Ordered four of these lovely chairs and they look really smart. Having never tackled a self assembly job like this before I looked at the other reviews and followed the advice given. I partially screwed and then unscrewed the screws as well as using a little oil on them so thanks to other reviewers for the helpful tips as they worked a treat.
I wanted a neutral colour so went for Smoke and it is very classy as well as being a 'go with anything' shade. I'm very pleased with this purchase!
