John Lewis Zane Desk
Superb when finished. It took 5hrs for me to build without assistance. Construction is not for beginners it is not an easy build. A suggestion re fitting the very heavy glass top. Place the glass on the floor flat, then with the desk upside down offer it up to the top. The top can then be screwed in place easily.

I like it
After reading other reviews talking about the build time I was kind of looking forward to the challenge of seeing how quickly I could assemble this desk ;)
Working by myself, it took me an hour and a half to assemble the drawer unit and drawers, another half an hour to assemble the desk itself, and near another half an hour to attach the runners to the drawers and get them into place. So, counting the time to unpack everything it took me the best part of three hours. Which is OK as long as you are not expecting it to only take half an hour.
Lifting the glass top into place is the only thing that you might prefer to get help with. As soon as I picked it up I immediately regretted doing to by myself - but I got away with it.
Another reviewer talked about the need to countersink the holes for attaching the drawer backs. This was already done on mine.
I had some trouble lining up the drawer unit sides and had to sit on it to bang the pieces together. I think the issue was the angle of the pegs I'd screwed in, so try to make sure these go in straight. The supplied screwdriver can be used like a bradawl to clear the paint out of the holes - which helps make sure the pegs go in straight.
The plastic film covering the drawer unit pieces and drawer fronts is so tightly on there I never would have realised I needed to peel that off if I hadn't read about it here.
The biggest problem I had is that when I slotted the first drawer into place a bunch of the ball bearings popped out of the runners and can't be put back in place. But there are enough left that it still works - so I'm not sure if can be bothered asking for replacement runners.

Smart looking desk
Bought the white version on-line without seeing the product in store but certainly not disappointed. The desk looks fabulous and as the drawers look to be floating gives a very modern look and also practical as can vacuum underneath. The glass desk top is a perfect width and length. You do need a mouse mat though which we didn't on our other desk. It took about 2 hours to build.
The only way the product could be improved is by having the drawers 'soft closing'. They are a little bit stiff to open and close.
But otherwise an excellent product. Thank you John Lewis.

Desk is great but drawers are something else
As someone who is as good at DIY as chimpanzee would be, I thought the instructions were excellent. All the parts were marked with the correct number so there was no trying to guess which part the diagram was referring to. It took me about 2 hours to complete but the drawers were a nightmare. I did exactly as instructed but when I felt some strong resistance I stopped forcing the drawers along the runner. Having read the comments, if you just force the drawers in, then it works !! I thought I might damage them, but they work in a fashion. They sort of grate along the runners rather than glide. other than it it was good.

Desk looks fab when up. This took two of two hours to put together - husband did most of it I just organised 'the parts and screws'. Make sure you clear holes before putting bits together as it is sprayed after holes drilled. I found it difficult to screw the plug screws in as needed a bit more grip and force. The most difficult part is putting the drawers in at the very end - you do need a bit more force than you think you can give it. In light of hat has been said about beads in the drawers I don't think they will be coming out again - so when we move the drawers will be taped in to be safe.

Don't Waste Your Money and Time
Beautiful desk in the store. It was delivered in two flat pack boxes with hundreds of pieces. The instructions said it would take two people 30 minutes to build. It took two people five hours (ie. 10 man hours) to put this desk together (without a break!) including building each draw from scratch. The end result was extremely disappointing. It looks fine but if you try to put a drawer out, the drawer face will come off in your hand. Ball bearings fell out completely when fitting the top draw and so it does not slide but cranks out. I have arranged collection by the store. Expected more from John Lewis. If I wanted flat pack I would have gone to an alternative store.

The desk itself being glass is nice, granted, but just exactly as the other reviews here, it's the drawer unit that's the problem, it's not a straightforward build, poor quality screws, cheap materials, the paint work isn't great, the drawers need to be wrestled into the slides and now they're in they're very stiff and stick when you open and close them, one of the ball bearings popped out during the build. Very disappointing, I'd expect better quality from John Lewis.
If you actually want a desk to use on a day-to-day basis (i.e. with drawers to use!!), I'd buy something else.
I bought a metal shelving unit with drawers from a very well known Swedish retailer and it leaves these drawers in the dust, much simpler to build, soft glide to close, the desks in this shop are £££ cheaper; I'd choose a desk from there over this one any day. Sorry John Lewis, usually my store of choice... you failed to deliver a quality product, poor, poor, poor!!! I will be complaining to the store.

8 hours to assemble!!
I bought this desk after seeing it at John Lewis Oxford Street. The finished product did look great and at a fair price. When I purchased I was told part assembly was required. When it arrived in 2 boxes and hundreds of pieces I was surprised to see the instruction manual said 30 mins to assemble. 8 hours later and it doesn't look exactly the same as the finished article on display at John Lewis - impossible to align the drawers correctly and they do not glide well on the runners. However, it's still an attractive desk.
