René Lacoste, winner of Wimbledon, Forest Hill and Roland Garros, create the brand Lacoste in 1927, and in doing so made the first range of sportswear. The first batch of shirts Lacoste created were made of mesh material to ensure they would fully absorb perspiration. They were an immediate hit on the tennis courts.
The Lacoste shirt replaced the long-sleeved, starched, woven shirt with a top that remained elegant, but provided freedom of movement. In 1933 Lacoste joined forces with Andre Gillier, the owner of one of the biggest and oldest hosiery factories in Troyes specialising in mesh materials, to make pique cotton polo shirts.
This universal brand designs sports and active clothing for men, women and children, as well as fragrance , eyewear, footwear, watches, and technical products for tennis and golf.
