When I first bought these placemats I thought they were lovely, so I bought another 2 sets. After I had used them a few times they started to mark and deteriorate very easily, even cleaning them marked them. Now I need them all for Christmas day, I will have to spend more money buying different mats because these need throwing in the bin. Total waste of my money, annoying!

Bought 2 sets of these and matching coasters and on getting them home was so disappointed. The quailty and finish of both products is appalling and I will be returning them..wish I had read the reviews on this page before purchasing them!

I ordered these mats and also read the poor reviews submitted by previous customers. For some reason I felt they were all incredibly fussy customers but I was wrong . They were right. The mats were a good size but came with a variety of individual distinguishing marks which would lead you to conclude they are substandard.
Only positive experience was the helpfulness of the staff in seeking a refund. However i now need to check and see if the money has actaully been refunded.

I am really disappointed with this item, it doesn't look nice, I don't mind scratched effect on the mats but it just looks old and in very bad condition. Unfortunately had to return it.

Dispite reading the bad reviews of this product, i decided to give them a go. I also bought the matching coasters. After all, this is John Lewis, how bad can the quality be???? Turns out very. They were chipped in places and appeared to have dirt or grit stuck under the Lacquer. Not what i expect from John Lewis. I went ahead and returned them for some plain wooden placemats which were more expensive. The quality was, again, shocking. I'm afraid i have lost a little faith in John Lewis after this experience.

Bought this product despite reading some unfavourable reviews regarding the quality and have found that marks on the front of mats I can live with but backing fabric fraying at edges is definately abit more shabby chic than Id bargained for. Cant see them lasting as long as I would expect. 1st purchase from John Lewis and unimpressed overall.

Stylish but some quality issues
Just what we wanted to make our rustic, reclaimed wood, table smart from time to time. We bought 12 of them and they have almost a 'machined' look to them. However, despite trying to look raw and metallic, there's no excuse for some of the manufacturing details which have also been mentioned by other reviewers. The lacquer on some has dust specks in it, has rough edges where some kind of masking hasn't been applied/removed cleanly, the beize backs are sometime not flat and have folds in them.
Altogether a nice product which is slightly let down by manufacturing quality.
