Brand Story

The company that was destined to become LEGO started life as being a small workshop that produced wooden toys, run by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932. The name ‘LEGO’ was adopted in 1934, coming from the Danish phrase ‘leg godt’, which means ‘play well’. It wasn’t until 1947 that they started producing plastic toys, with the first version of the now infamous interlocking bricks coming in 1949.
They weren’t quite the bricks that people are used to nowadays, being made from a different material and having a slightly different locking system. It was actually Christiansen’s son Godtfred Kirk that saw the potential for the bricks to become a tool for creative play and in 1958, the modern brick design was born. From this date, despite variation in the design and purpose of individual pieces over the years, each remains compatible in some way with previous pieces. So you could have a LEGO set from 1958 and it would still be completely compatible with a modern set.
Since the 1960, thousands of sets have been released covering everything from Aliens to the Wild West. The only area that the company has never tackled directly is military-themed sets, because Ole Kirk set a policy that they must never make war seem like child’s play. The largest ever LEGO set to date is a scale-model of the Taj Mahal, which was made out of 5922 pieces.
The LEGO Group's motto is ‘det bedste er ikke for godt’, which roughly translates to "only the best is the best". Ole Kirk Christiansen came up with this phrase to encourage workers to always produce the highest quality toys possible.
Nowadays, LEGO makes a vast range of toys for all ages, as well as teaching materials for children, which are distributed in over 130 countries. The company has approximately 10,000 employees and is the world's third largest manufacturer of play materials.

Q & As

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 34 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Better than expected I bought this for my 38 year old son for Christmas. He and his girlfriend took a trip to Paris last Summer. He was very pleased with it and we were both happy at the size of it. I bought him the Empire State Building a year ago, so thought it would be small like that one. It's very impressive when done. 28 January 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by This was my third Lego set (also my third from the Architecture line) and the most challenging of those I've built so far--also certainly the most interesting! Each stage of building was an adventure; aside from the base, I could never quite tell what I was working on till the end of a section. There's a large variety of pieces used for this one, many of which I'd never seen used--this was my first experience with the click-in ones, for example. It was always nicely revelatory to see how things came together (like realizing where the rubbery bits went); each stage was paced in a way where you could easily take breaks between sections, if you like. Occasionally I had some trouble clicking everything into place, but the model ended up feeling reliably sturdy--even with the built-in ability to shift and wiggle! It looks wonderful on the shelf! I initially thought the matte-looking grey might not display well, but it ends up looking very presentable. 16 January 2016

Rated 4 out of 5 by Eiffel Tower This is only my second Architecture build, the first being Big Ben, I was extremely pleased with this build! I expected it perhaps to be as thin and as small as Big Ben, but turned out to be completely the opposite. It's taller and 'chunkier'. You also have a choice of having the name plate in English or French, I personally put the English title at the front and French at the back. The model itself is nice to look at and the colour of it works too, in sense of 'play' it is clearly a model for display purposes as this theme is however, I guess it could be used as a background scene for a bigger set? Rated 5 out of 5 by Nice set This set was very high quality, the box, the base of the tower, etc, as expected by LEGO Architecture. It was also much larger than I expected it to be, and towers above my other Architecture themed sets. Fun to build, and designed very well using hinges. The play factor was weak, but it is meant to be, as it is a display model. Overall, I recommend this set, so if you are thinking about buying it, do it. 26 December 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Looks great but a little pricey Looks really cool and is a great build, only downside is how much it costs knowing it has little playability. 23 December 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Eiffel Tower-Perfect Gift I bought this for my 12 year old daughter and she absolutely loves it!! Best gift this year! She is a Paris fan and was completely thrilled!! 02 September 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Set Though not as intricately detailed as the real Eiffel Tower (but who could expect it to be?), this set looks amazing. With a piece-to-price ratio of about $0.11/piece, this set is a great value for your money. Though not as difficult a build as other Architecture sets, younger children may still have some trouble assembling this. In summary, fun building, good price, and great assortment of different pieces. 22 July 2015
