Product information

This authentic camper van is a replica of the classic Volkswagen T1 Camper Van from 1962. On the outside, the terrific detailing includes a 'V' shape three-way colour split at the front, rounded roof and window frames, opening 'splittie' safari wind-shield, opening doors, iconic pop-up roof with textile curtain surround, roof rack, rear side air intake vents and lots more.

The detailing is equally impressive on the inside, from the authentic VW air-cooled flat four cylinder 'boxer' engine, front cabin bench seat, gear stick, angled dashboard and iconic spherical speedometer; to custom Lego features like folding rear bench seat, folding dinette table, closet with mirror and even a painting.

Editors Notes

The company that was destined to become Lego started life as being a small workshop that produced wooden toys, run by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932. The name ‘Lego’ was adopted in 1934, coming from the Danish phrase ‘leg godt’, which means ‘play well’. It wasn’t until 1947 that they started producing plastic toys, with the first version of the now infamous interlocking bricks coming in 1949.

They weren’t quite the bricks that people are used to nowadays, being made from a different material and having a slightly different locking system. It was actually Christiansen’s son Godtfred Kirk that saw the potential for the bricks to become a tool for creative play and in 1958, the modern brick design was born. From this date, despite variation in the design and purpose of individual pieces over the years, each remains compatible in some way with previous pieces. So you could have a Lego set from 1958 and it would still be completely compatible with a modern set.

Since the 1960, thousands of sets have been released covering everything from Aliens to the Wild West. The only area that the company has never tackled directly is military-themed sets, because Ole Kirk set a policy that they must never make war seem like child’s play. The largest ever Lego set to date is a scale-model of the Taj Mahal, which was made out of 5922 pieces.

The Lego Group's motto is ‘det bedste er ikke for godt’, which roughly translates to "only the best is the best". Ole Kirk Christiansen came up with this phrase to encourage workers to always produce the highest quality toys possible.

Nowadays, Lego makes a vast range of toys for all ages, as well as teaching materials for children, which are distributed in over 130 countries. The company has approximately 10,000 employees and is the world's third largest manufacturer of play materials.

Worth every penny!! Worth every penny. Simple as this!! Hope Lego will release more similar designs or product 01 May 2013
Truly fantastic I bought this, as I thought it would be quite fun to build. When I opened the box I was amazed to find the number of pieces there were. I know it listed the number of pieces on the outside of the box, but its not until you open the box that you realise how big a challenge it actually is!! After sorting through the pieces, putting various different bits into plastic storage containers, I was then ready to start building. After completing about 40 minutes of construction each night for about a week it was finished. I have to say the detail is amazing. I have not played with lego for about 25 years but after completing this set I felt as chuffed today as I did back then!! If you think your too old for lego, think again! 16 January 2013
An affordable VW Classic Lego at its ver best Im a little over the hill really, but having bought oodles of Lego for my 5 girls and family and friends over the years, I requested....rather insisted that Santa bought me something nice this year......and he did. Over 1300 pieces of pure Lego loveliness. I drive a VW (it's not as nice ad the model tho') and coud not believe the intricate details and fittings, it took a good couple of afternoons to build it and although I managed to drop kick my sorting tray halfway across the living room in my excitement to show my daughters my patience was rewarded with the finished piece. Locks together perfectly although there are definitely more fiddly bits it is really for aged 16 and above, although my 12 year old ASD daughter would have made very short work of it........... if I hadn't been such a mean mummy and allowed her to build it. Really good sized model overall and a very satisfying build if I may say. Tho what would have been really nice is if Lego built a scale sized chap to sit in the front seat and a little family in the back. Well worth every penny....now to decide whether I break it up or find a space in the cupboard for it......... 09 January 2013
Fantastic! Bought this as a surprise gift for my 20 year old son and he loved it! Takes quite a while to build as there are so many tiny pieces (tricky for big fingers), but the detailing is amazing and there are many 'working' features. Worth saying we had no pieces missing. Brilliant gift and would highly recommend it! 05 January 2013
A boys' delight Bought for my son-in -law as a Christmas present, he was delighted but my 6 year old grandson quickly nabbed it, and it was completed in one day!! 03 January 2013
Complex but fun This was really hard but kept my husband, sons aged 16 and 22 and son in law occupied all over Christmas! A good product but a few small pieces were missing. 01 January 2013
Great Product I brought this camper van for my son this Christmas and he loved it. After sorting out what seemed to be about a thousand pieces we spent the next 5 hours building it but it was worth the effort. It has loads of little details that makes it special, seats that fold into a bed, collapsible table and pop up roof to name a few. It has now taken pride of place in his bedroom. 28 December 2012
I want one too Bought as a gift. I'm buying one too. Fantastic kit. Intricate detail ... v. good quality. Folk with V-dubs tend to accumulate lots merchandise but I reckon this lego set would be a welcome addition to anyone's obsession. 24 December 2012
