Brand Story

The company that was destined to become LEGO started life as being a small workshop that produced wooden toys, run by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932. The name ‘LEGO’ was adopted in 1934, coming from the Danish phrase ‘leg godt’, which means ‘play well’. It wasn’t until 1947 that they started producing plastic toys, with the first version of the now infamous interlocking bricks coming in 1949.
They weren’t quite the bricks that people are used to nowadays, being made from a different material and having a slightly different locking system. It was actually Christiansen’s son Godtfred Kirk that saw the potential for the bricks to become a tool for creative play and in 1958, the modern brick design was born. From this date, despite variation in the design and purpose of individual pieces over the years, each remains compatible in some way with previous pieces. So you could have a LEGO set from 1958 and it would still be completely compatible with a modern set.
Since the 1960, thousands of sets have been released covering everything from Aliens to the Wild West. The only area that the company has never tackled directly is military-themed sets, because Ole Kirk set a policy that they must never make war seem like child’s play. The largest ever LEGO set to date is a scale-model of the Taj Mahal, which was made out of 5922 pieces.
The LEGO Group's motto is ‘det bedste er ikke for godt’, which roughly translates to "only the best is the best". Ole Kirk Christiansen came up with this phrase to encourage workers to always produce the highest quality toys possible.
Nowadays, LEGO makes a vast range of toys for all ages, as well as teaching materials for children, which are distributed in over 130 countries. The company has approximately 10,000 employees and is the world's third largest manufacturer of play materials.

Q & As

Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by very poor clasp I must say I was very very very disappointed with the lego friends watch with a dodgy clasp,my 7 year old daughter is a very big lego friends fan saves all her money to buy lego friends at this stage I think we have nearly all the lego friends range. There is not a week goes buy that she doesn't get some piece of lego. On a recent trip to disneyland my daughter was super excited to find a lego store there and even more excited to discover the lego friends watch so she bought it out of her own money taught she would never get it on . But the sad think is after a few hours the watch was gone it had fallen of her hand. When we were fixing it on I thought to myself that the clasp didn't look that strong but believed it would have being tested well , but my judgement was right the clasp was faulty, loose and not very secure and we were left with one very sad girl who cried for hours. I would not recommend this product to anyone ad the clasp is very loose and falls off very easily. It is pricey enough we paid 27:49 and was gone within hours so for the money I am one very disappointed mother and would tell any parent to think twice about buying this product as we still have a very very sad 7 year old girl and we live in Ireland and can not buy this product here. 27 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great fun, just be observant! I was surprised to find the watch too big for my adult wrist with all the links in, so there's plenty of building fun available. The plastic is lighter than standard LEGO pieces, but it holds up fine. The only problem I have had is with the clasp. It is not the most secure thing. I've had it fall off while taking off a sweater. It has also fallen off when I failed to close the clasp just right. I bought both styles of Friends watches and have enjoyed mixing the pieces. 09 January 2013
