Q & As

Rated 2.8 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Awful fittings - but look nice Bought five of these lights and after the bulbs went I have never been successful with any new bulb replacements. I went back to JL to complain and they suggested buying a particular bulb to try. Tried suggested bulbs and still got problems. I would not recommend these lights. I never leave reviews but went on line to see if anyone else had problems. After reading similar problems I thought I'd leave my review too. Very disappointed with this product from John Lewis. 16 May 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Product We have recently brought two of these lights for our bookcase, and so far they have been excellent value for money. 10 March 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Over bed lamp. Though not intended for the use to which we have put it, it has proved ideal. We like the modern style and the slim profile. We would rate it highly.JB 03 March 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Avoid this product Brought a pair of these lights some 10years ago and they worked well for a couple of years but then they failed due to the poor contacts between bulb and the socket-an electrician friend looked at them and cleaned the contacts and they worked for a while then they failed again and now we never use them.A very disappointing purchase 16 February 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Stunning contemporary picture light I had been looking everywhere for a picture light that was contemporary enough to suit our newly decorated living room, that didn't cost the earth and that was well-made and stylish. This certainly does the trick and I would thoroughly recommend. 09 July 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by mixed review I have lots of these picture lights. Probably about 30. I have been buying them for ten years and have just bought another. In terms of looks there is nothing to touch them. There are issues with them, however. It is true that the wall-mounted box is not quite deep enough for the transformer inside, making it tricky to fit. But it is just about possible (and always essential to make sure the wires inside don't overlap the transformer and put pressure on it). The bulb issue: many light manufacturers supply cheap unbranded bulbs to save costs. I don't know if that is what happens with these picture lights, but it may explain why bulbs are not lasting. It may be that better quality replacement bulbs will last better. I have never had an issue with the bulbs not lasting, but that may be because they have started supplying cheaper bulbs recently. The main issue is in fact the connection between the bulb and the socket. The problem is that the contacts are so small that they can never fit perfectly. The result is that there is often a microscopic sparking going on inside the socket, which results in corrosion. The corrosion acts as an insulator and prevents a good connection, so the problem gradually gets worse. Some people may thing the bulb has died when in fact it is a case of corrosion inside the socket. My solution, which works, is to sand the contacts on the bulb carefully to remove any corrosion and to slightly adjust the shape of them with fine pliers, just to change the area in the socket where contact is made. It often helps. I have some of these lights lying unused in a drawer because the contacts are bad. But then I have six in a row in my hall which have always worked perfectly. My advice is that if you start to see the flickering and intermittent swithching-off that indicates bad contacts the best thing is to stop using the light before too much corrosion builds up in the sockets and try to improve the contacts as suggested above. 16 May 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Do not buy I have two lovely pictures & these Picture lights looked ideal for giving the right lighting, the first two that we purchased worked well for a year then the bulbs went.We replaced the bulbs to know avail, the electrician said they had burnt out.We purchased another two lights , again we have the same problem , this time its with only one of the lights .Sorry John Lewis, i will not be buying this product again , sadly this is the first time i have had a problem with anything i have purchased from you ,please get rid of this product , it does not meet with the high standard your shop has earned 11 May 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by OK looks but very poor usability We have several of these lights in our living room and although they look quite nice they are very poor to use. The bulbs go absolutely all the time and are a huge huge pain to replace. Removing the 'arms' on either side of the light to get to the bulbs is a pain and very fiddly, and the bulbs themselves are extremely delicate and hard to push in properly without damaging. This would be tolerable if the bulbs weren't going all the time, but they do! Save yourself a massive headache and buy something else. 26 April 2014
