John Lewis Litho Picture Light, Steel
Stunning contemporary picture light
I had been looking everywhere for a picture light that was contemporary enough to suit our newly decorated living room, that didn't cost the earth and that was well-made and stylish. This certainly does the trick and I would thoroughly recommend.

I have lots of these picture lights. Probably about 30. I have been buying them for ten years and have just bought another. In terms of looks there is nothing to touch them. There are issues with them, however. It is true that the wall-mounted box is not quite deep enough for the transformer inside, making it tricky to fit. But it is just about possible (and always essential to make sure the wires inside don't overlap the transformer and put pressure on it).
The bulb issue: many light manufacturers supply cheap unbranded bulbs to save costs. I don't know if that is what happens with these picture lights, but it may explain why bulbs are not lasting. It may be that better quality replacement bulbs will last better. I have never had an issue with the bulbs not lasting, but that may be because they have started supplying cheaper bulbs recently.
The main issue is in fact the connection between the bulb and the socket. The problem is that the contacts are so small that they can never fit perfectly. The result is that there is often a microscopic sparking going on inside the socket, which results in corrosion. The corrosion acts as an insulator and prevents a good connection, so the problem gradually gets worse. Some people may thing the bulb has died when in fact it is a case of corrosion inside the socket. My solution, which works, is to sand the contacts on the bulb carefully to remove any corrosion and to slightly adjust the shape of them with fine pliers, just to change the area in the socket where contact is made. It often helps.
I have some of these lights lying unused in a drawer because the contacts are bad. But then I have six in a row in my hall which have always worked perfectly. My advice is that if you start to see the flickering and intermittent swithching-off that indicates bad contacts the best thing is to stop using the light before too much corrosion builds up in the sockets and try to improve the contacts as suggested above.

OK looks but very poor usability
We have several of these lights in our living room and although they look quite nice they are very poor to use. The bulbs go absolutely all the time and are a huge huge pain to replace. Removing the 'arms' on either side of the light to get to the bulbs is a pain and very fiddly, and the bulbs themselves are extremely delicate and hard to push in properly without damaging. This would be tolerable if the bulbs weren't going all the time, but they do! Save yourself a massive headache and buy something else.

This is a light I have purchased for two different houses in the UK and it is totally unreliable!!!! The bulbs last 2-4 weeks and then blow. I am going to return these products as they are a waste of time and I am surprised that JL are still selling them after the reviews they have received to date. In addition I am not a customer who ever writes reviews.

Build quality issues
We bought one of these a few years ago now and it was fine while it lasted.
I had the bulb issues that others have commented on but these could be sorted with a little care and understanding.
The top switch itself has now broken after very few actuations, leaving us with a light that looks good but doesn't work.
Very poor product.

Only the design is good
We've had three of these for a couple of years, we've replaced one because only one bulb would work, teh replacement had the same fault, we got another unit that intermittently has the same fault. When they work the light is good and the design is nice enough but they are very difficult to fit and the bulbs go too regularly and are very difficult to replace properly. Ive just replaced two and one disintegrated when I took it out leaving the pins in the holder, carefully taking the pins out with pliers worked the base unit loose in its holder.

Dreadful don't buy
I bought four of these lights and each and every one of them has failed - the lamps start to flicker then just go dim or fail to work - changing the buld seems the obvious thing to do but new ones don't work
