A reproduction of a black and white linocut by Henri Matisse. It depicts a woman crouched in the foetal position and wearing a bracelet.

Henri Matisse was known for his fluid use of colour, defining the art movement of the early twentieth century. He is now recognised as a leading figure for modern art. Over six decades, he carved a career using all forms of media, including drawing, sculpture and printmaking.

Born 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France, he was originally a legal clerk. He began drawing at an evening class before moving to Paris in 1891 to pursue his vocation as an artist. It wasn't until the beginning of the twentieth century when he had his major creative breakthrough. A visit to Saint-Tropez inspired him to paint a bright, light-dappled canvas. He continued this style, which became known a Fauvism.

Some of his most noted pieces happened during his later years. He was often bedridden due to illness and surgery but he still managed to produce breakthrough works using paper cut-outs.

Now you can have fabulous artwork in a size to fit your space. The high-quality image resolution on paper creates exceptional clarity, depth and richness of colour that really enlivens your walls.

Handmade from ash wood, the frames and rims come in a choice of light natural colour or a chocolate brown stain. Simply select the desired frame option, then choose from the sizes available. Each is finished with a wax coating that protects and shows off the natural grain. In line with our timber policy, the wood frame is from sustainable managed sources.
