Product information

Thinner, lighter and faster, with a stunning new Full HD screen, the Surface 2 is great for work and play. Running Windows 8.1 RT, Surface 2 comes with Microsoft Office Home and Student RT Edition, giving you access to your favourite Office apps out of the box, as well as thousands more to download from the Microsoft Store, including Xbox, music, movie, games and social networking apps. It also comes with subscriptions to SkyDrive and the Best of Skype, helping you get the most of your tablet as soon as you turn it on.

Key Features:

  • Super thin with a depth of just 8.9mm, Surface 2 is a thinner, lighter, yet still robust tablet, making it perfect to carry with you or slip into a bag while you travel. The VaporMg casing with a magnesium finish delivers excellent protection with a sophisticated look.

  • The 10.6", 16:9 display features a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, giving you a stunning Full HD picture, with 50% more accurate colours than in the previous model. The speakers have been improved too, so you can enjoy HD movies with immersive sound.

  • Use your Surface 2 on your lap or on a desk with no additional accessories, thanks to the improved kickstand. The kickstand is able to be placed at two angles, ensuring you a great view from any position.

  • Surface 2 is equipped with front and rear-facing LifeCam cameras to give you great quality photos and videos and crisp images when video calling on Skype. The front facing webcam features 3.5 megapixels spread over a 1/3" sensor, for a high quality image, even in low light, while the 5 megapixel rear camera is great for snapping high resolution photos and videos. 2 microphones also ensure that friends and family get the best sound possible over web chats.

  • Surface 2 features connectivity options normally found in larger, bulkier machines. A superfast USB 3.0 port will enable you to connect USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices, whether it's an external hard drive or a mouse, while HD video out will let you plug your Surface into an HD TV to share content with others on a big screen. A micoSDXC port will also give you the option of increasing storage space on your Surface and transferring data from microSD compatible devices much faster and quicker than with a cable.

  • A battery life of up to 10 hours will keep Surface 2 going all day without needing to plug in to recharge.

  • Surface comes with a 2 year subscription to SkyDrive, giving you 200GB's of cloud storage for free. SkyDrive can automatically sync your files and folders, saving them to the cloud as well as on your Surface, giving you access to them anywhere in the world. SkyDrive also gives you access to the Microsoft Office Web Apps, so you can create and edit documents, spreadsheets, Powerpoint presentations and OneNote files on the go.

  • You'll also be given a year's subscription to Skype's Unlimited World Calling package for free calls to landlines in over 60 countries and unlimited Skype Wi-Fi at over 2 million hotspots in airports, hotels, train stations and cafés worldwide.

  • Keyboard Sold Separately.

Q & As

Microsoft Surface 2 Tablet, NVIDIA Tegra 4, Windows RT 8.1 & Microsoft Office RT 2013, 10.6", 32GB, Wi-Fi, Magnesium 3.5 5 24 24
A great tablet at a great price. I have been interested in the Surface for a while now & when the price was reduced I took the plunge but after doing so I read the reviews here about the battery issues so was naturally concerned. Fortunately, mine did not have the same issues. The tablet itself is extremely well made and feels good in the hand. The screen is punchy & sharp delivering a great viewing experience. I have found it to be responsive & very easy to use having previously had Apple & Android tablets. The app store does contain less applications but to date this has not caused me a problem. The kick stand is an excellent feature which makes using it on the lap on a table very easy and much better than a fold over case. The product description does advise that the 32 gig storage only equates to 18 gigs of usable space however I have not found this to be case. After setting it up and adding a few small apps the storage had dropped to 12.5 gigs. Fortunately this is not a great issue for me but for some it might be although the SD card option does offer additional space. Overall, I am enjoying using this tablet and for the price it represents excellent value for money. 14 September 2014
Good product but need to know about computers Have had this for a few days and did have battery issues as some have mentioned. However, I activated windows (had to do this manually as i set it up incorrectly on first turn on so had to correct the date and time. It then activated automatically), then downloaded windows updates in PC settings. Battery now charges fine and no problems. These tablets were manufactured a year ago so the software needs updating. I did also have problems with downloading latest updates, but kept trying ( the fault was with my wireless and thinking it had froze as it took so long to install updates.) I also used windows troubleshooter which corrects issues automatically. With a combination of my own knowledge of computers and the internet it now works fine. These issues are not much different to what happens when you buy a new PC. Windows operating system is more complex than apples so needs a bit of knowledge. It is not going to work fully out of the box in some cases. This is half way between a tablet and a laptop so users will need a bit of computer know how to set it up properly. 13 September 2014
Completely unreliable I bought this tablet for my 17 year old daughter for her sixth form studies as it seemed a good alternative to a laptop. It looks solid and well built and is much lighter than most laptops. The first Surface 2 developed a software problem within a week and would not update Windows 8 (it went round in a constant loop stating it was "unable to configure updates"). I returned it for a replacement; the second one was faulty out of the box. It suffered the same battery issues that the other reviewers describe - which is that it will not charge at all, and only works when plugged in. So it is completely useless and I am returning to John Lewis again this week to look for an alternative product from a supplier who checks their products before putting them on the shop floor. Avoid Microsoft products like the plague if my experience is anything to go by! 09 September 2014
Same battery problem as others After doing much research, I decided on this product...epecially with the price reduction & the 3 year guarantee. The first and replacement surface won't charge. I know there is a previous post with a workaround but I don't really have any confidence in the product in the future even with the guarantee so have asked for a refund. Customer service at JL has been great, shame Microsoft can't sort their product out ;-( 06 September 2014
Great tablet, but faulty out of box I had the same problem that other reviewers have had with the recent batch of Surface 2 tablets. Right out of the box, the tablet would not power on without being plugged in, and the battery would display "plugged in, not charging". If I was to remove the charging cable, the tablet would immediately turn off. Not great for a portable device! After googling the problem, it appeared that this would require a return and I was a bit gutted about having to send it back. Having entered a fair amount of my various windows account information, I decided to reset the device back to factory defaults (settings>Change PC settings>Update and recovery>Recovery>Remove everything and reinstall Windows). After completing this process, the tablet is now fully functional! The battery issue is no longer present, charges like it is supposed to and can be used as normal. I thought I would post this information for anyone else having the same problem as I did as a possible for for those who don't want to immediately sent their tablets back; however I will be doing this if the issue surfaces again (pun not intended). As for the tablet itself, it takes a small while to get everything up and running but once you're all set up it is a very fast and responsive little machine. I bought mine with the intention of using it for taking notes during university lectures. Most of the features of this tablet aren't immediately apparent, but once you do some exploring there's a lot it can do. A part of me wishes I had forked out the extra £££ for the functionality of full Windows 8.1, but I never intended it to be a replacement for my laptop. Office 2013 is included and works well, and will hopefully be even more useful once I purchase the type cover. The kick stand feel robust, left and right speakers are a nice touch. All in all a great tablet for the price! 02 September 2014
Poor At first it did not charge. It was saying plugged in but not charging. After playing around a bit and searching online I found it was an ongoing problem. Having trawling through the points onto rectifying the problem I rebooted back to windows start up it would not load windows or any other personal details that I had put in. I returned the device for full refund 02 September 2014
Faulty battteries I had exactly the problem referred to by ws226. I took delivery of a Microsoft Surface 2 32GB yesterday and could not get the battery to charge with the report - plugged in, not charging. I am now awaiting a replacement. I also hope John Lewis will do something about this. 01 September 2014
Faulty batch? Purchased one of these 5 days ago and had to be returned as despite the charger being recognised it would not charge. Replacement received today has identical fault. Do not bother ringing Microsoft Technical Support total waste of time! 31 August 2014
