Microsoft Windows 8.1 Upgrade DVD, 32/64-bit
Windows 8.1 is suitable for customers who are upgrading from Windows 7.
Microsoft Windows 8.1 is ideal for work and play. It lets you watch movies or play games, chat with friends, access files anywhere or find your next favourite app in the Windows Store. And you can get to it all, including your familiar desktop, from the new Start screen.
Take control of your computer with the Start Screen and Live Tiles. The Start Screen makes it easier to get to the apps you access most, including your familiar desktop, quickly. You can move tiles around and group them into categories, so apps will be displayed where you choose. Tiles can also be customised and live tiles aren't just static links to an app- they’ll update you with news in real time, whether it be from Twitter or the weather, keeping you informed without even needing to open the app.
The classic Windows desktop is still here- and will provide access to any installed applications from Windows 7, Vista and XP, as well as providing access to devices, advanced settings and the other features you used in previous versions of Windows. With Windows 8.1, the desktop also includes a Start Button, delivering a familiar way to get quick access to all of your programs.
Microsoft’s new Charms system gives you quick access to a variety of functions, no matter which screen you’re on. Simply swipe in from the left (or hover over one of the left corners with a mouse) to bring up the Charms menu, with shortcuts to Search, Share, Start Screen, Devices and Settings.
Search will provide results from whichever app you’re in, or the entire computer if you’re on the Start Screen.
Share enables you to quickly post news or content you’ve just discovered to Facebook, Twitter or send it to someone in an e-mail.
Start Screen provides a quick link back to your homepage
Devices will manage printers and smartphones.
Settings contains access to personalisation features, as well as network settings, power controls and more.
Access apps specifically designed to make your experience easier, using the Windows Store. These apps are designed to work with Windows 8.1 to provide you with a seamless experience, and many will even work in conjunction with one or another to give you the best possible experience.
Great apps such as Mail, Photos, Internet Explorer, Skype and SkyDrive are already built in to Windows 8.1. Internet Explorer 10 has been rebuilt to take advantage of Windows 8.1, providing a fast, fluid browsing experience. SkyDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage system- mean you can upload files to your own personal account on the internet and then pull them off whenever you need them- from any internet connected device.
Your upgrade experience will depend on what version of Windows you currently have. For example, if your PC is running Windows 7 Home Basic or Home Premium your files, programs and settings will easily transfer to Windows 8.1. If your PC is running Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, Windows XP or Windows Vista, you'll need to perform a clean install and reinstall your programs, files and settings.
