Nikon DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Standard Zoom Lens

Product information

This Nikon 16-85mm DX lens features a powerful 5.3x zoom with a wide 16-85mm focal range (35mm equivalent: 24 to 127.5mm), making it perfect for everything from portraits to interiors, architecture and landscapes.

The second-generation Vibration Reduction (VR II) stabilization system enables more flexible hand-held shooting and lets you use shutter speeds that are up to 4 times slower. It also features SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for fast, whisper-quiet autofocus.

Please note: Nikon DX lenses are primarily designed for use on cameras with an APS-C size sensor. When used on full-frame cameras, vignetting may occur.

Q & As

Nikon DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Standard Zoom Lens 4.8 5 6 6
An Excellent Lens with great Optical characteristics I considered an upgrade from the standard 18-55mm kit lens for a while, and this lens seemed to offer much more. It has lived up to and exceeded my expectations. The quality and clarity of my photos is so much better (with a Nikon D5100). The extra 2mm wide angle - 16mm rather 18mm - actual makes a much bigger difference than you might expect enabling a good wide view for landscapes or a different perspective for close ups. Lens is very well made and feels robust, and whilst heavier then the kit lens the camera feels more balanced so not a problem. The extra reach over the standard 55mm is also good. So in summary a great lens which will help to improve your photos and is excellent value. 21 April 2014
Excellent value lens A very good value lens for general use. Far better than the kit lenses. It balances nicely on my D7000 and the cost reflects the quality. Unless you can afford the professional Nikon lenses which cost and weigh at lot more, it is ideal for a keen hobbyist. 25 November 2012
Good copy Certain lenses get a name for sharpness. Not much is usually said about the other aspects of a lens' performance - chromatic aberration, distortion, vignetting, etc. This lens, if you get a good copy, controls all of these aspects well and is sharp across the frame throughout the zoom range. It is not a fast lens (f3.5-5.6) but as a general purpose lens, this is an excellent lens. Many will require nothing more. It is a positive step up from the kit lenses Nikon supplies. 17 September 2012
Good kit lens Everyone needs a kit lens with this kind of zoom range from wide angle to portrait and this one performs well. Distortion is to be expected at the widest setting but is no worse than any similar alternative. It is sharp thoroughout the focal range and across the image frame. If you own a Nikon this should be in your kit bag. 29 July 2012
Expensive but superior When the existing standard 18-55 zoom on my Nikon D90 signalled its retirement by refusing to autofocus, I needed a new zoom lens for this normal range. The budget choice was a straight replacement- the 18-55 is certainly a sharp lens. Another, more expensive, option would be the Nikon AF 18-70 ED. I next looked at this 16-85 which offers attractively low barrel distortion and colour fringe control. The lens has a metal inner body, a rubber seal on the body fit and has a substantial quality feel, especially when compared to the featherlight 18-55. It is a very sharp lens. In using it, I was delighted by the ultrafast autofocus and by the efficiency of Nikon's second generation vibration system- VRII, a feature not present on the other two lenses. Even with my shaky hands I could get sharp results at very low shutter speeds. I also found the extended zoom range very useful. This lens is not cheap, but has a lot to offer. 18 November 2011
A good multipurpose lens This is very much a general purpose lens, but not too big a zoom which means it's nice and portable. 16-85mm will suit most spur of the moment photo opportunities so it might be the only lens you need most of the time. Having the stabiliser is really important too, to avoid blurring, which can happen easily in low light when you need a longer exposure time. 10 July 2011
