Q & As

Rated 5 out of 5 by 1 reviewer.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Flawless I'm an amateur wildlife photographer and I use this lens in combination with a D800 and occasionally the TC-14E II teleconverter. This is a large and heavy lens. Despite being muscular I still struggle to hand-hold this lens and get good image quality for more than 5 minutes or so. The lens comes with various switches and buttons on it - these allow for focus limits, audible focus beep, active vs normal VR modes and even a pre-set focal distance setting. There is also a drop-in filter attachment which is plain-glass as standard but takes an optional polariser available separately. Two strap-loops on the sides protect your camera's lens-mount from the 3kg weight of this beast. The included carbon-fibre lens hood is essentially an open-ended tube with a retaining lug-screw that can be stored in a reversed position on the end of the lens and is light enough not to notice. The tripod mount is decent but longer replacements are available from independent manufacturers. Also, you will need an Arca-Swiss type tripod plate for most gimbal-type tripod heads to be compatible. Autofocus is lightning quick - this lens will go from 2.3m to infinity and back in a split-second. Coupled with a fast-processing full-frame camera like the D3 (plus variations), D4 or even my comparatively modest D800, the result is blazing-fast autofocus with reliable tracking - perfect for fast-moving objects like birds and motorbikes. Add a 1.4 x teleconverter and you have a 440mm f/4 lens which doesn't lose any of its autofocus speed or accuracy - which is a true testament to the lens quality. Image quality is simply stunning. Contrast and colour reproduction are first class. It doesn't come any better. I no longer add any post-processing contrast or saturation to my images, and very little sharpening - it just isn't needed. In summary, it you can heft it around and have the cash, you will be rewarded with telephoto perfection. 09 July 2013
