Product information

Designed to perform best at maximum aperture, this lens pushes the limits of image quality. The 58mm focal length and new optical construction enables astounding sharpness, contrast, and resolution. An exceptional lens for shooting night scenes, the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G reproduces point light sources like city lights all the way to the edge of the frame.

Light control
Exceptional resolving capability enables every component of a scene to be faithfully reproduced in exquisite high-resolution. Flare is effectively minimised for superior reproduction of point light sources as fine rounded points, even at the periphery of an image.

Bokeh
The intensity of bokeh transitions smoothly as the distance from the sharply focused point increases, resulting in no rough edges. Enables high-resolution images with an additional sense of depth.

Wide aperture, sharp results
Subjects are sharply rendered when shooting at the widest aperture of f/1.4. High contrast images of distant subjects or low-light scenes can be obtained without needing to stop down the aperture.

Even brightness
Peripheral light falloff is controlled to retain brightness across the frame. Subjects located at the edge of the frame are sharp and well-resolved, even when shooting at maximum aperture with focus set to infinity.

Less flare
Nano Crystal Coat effectively reduces ghost and flare, increasing the clarity and contrast of images. Autofocus is smooth, quiet, and swift, thanks to Nikon’s SWM (Silent Wave Motor).

Q & As

Rated 5 out of 5 by 1 reviewer.
Rated 5 out of 5 by A lens with soul... I had been considering this lens for some time, considering the price and the variability of reviews on the web. But in the end curiosity got the better of me... and I'm very glad it did! This lens is intended by Nikon to be a replacement for the long discontinued "Noctilux 58mm f1.2". Another very expensive fast standard lens, that was famous for its "character" with regard to creamy out-of-focus areas (bokek), and rendering of highlights and points of light. The new lens shares those characteristics, particularly when wide open (ie f1.4), when the non-flat focusing and lovely highlight treatment comes to the fore. It all makes for a 3D effect when used correctly, giving unparalleled subject / background separation in a very pleasing -almost film-like - manner. It's not for everyone though... And the price underlines that, very well ! If you just want a 50mm standard lens, buy the excellent and much cheaper Nikon f1.4 or f1.8. I still retain my f1.4 "nifty fifty" for general photography, but the 58mm is my choice for "arty", moody or portraiture with a wow factor. I was amazed tha John Lewis was offering this specialist lens at such a relatively bargain price, compared with the other main UK camera stores and websites. Coupled with their 2 year warranty and next-day click and collect at our local Waitrose (even on a bank holiday and Isle of Wight delivery, both of which can slow post to a crawl ! ) it was a no brainer to buy from here. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and the delivery service. 30 December 2015
