Product information

With a broad 80-400mm focal range and superior optical design, this lens is suited to a variety of subjects including wildlife, landscapes and sports. Nikon’s Vibration Reduction system lets you shoot at shutter speeds up to four stops slower for steady images at any focal length when shooting handheld. Four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and one Super ED glass elements correct chromatic aberration and the kind of optical colour defects that can occur at longer focal lengths.

  • FX-format telephoto zoom lens with 80-400mm focal range (120-600mm when used with a Nikon DX-format SLR).
  • Superb optical performance: four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one Super ED glass element help correct chromatic aberration and optical color defects, which can occur at longer focal lengths.
  • Nano Crystal Coat greatly reduces ghosting and flare even in backlit situations.
  • Vibration Reduction (VR) system with Normal, Active and Tripod modes. Minimizes camera shake and lets you shoot at shutter speeds up to four stops slower.
  • Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, quiet and accurate autofocus.
  • Three focus modes: A/M (autofocus with manual override, AF priority), M/A (autofocus with manual override, manual priority) and M (manual focus).
  • Lens barrel lock (when the barrel is collapsed at 80mm position) prevents the barrel extending under its weight when the lens is not in use.

Q & As

Rated 4 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by New Nikkor AF-S 80-400mm f4.5-5.6G I have used this lens extensively with a D7100 over several months with impressive results. The usual problem with telephoto zooms is that they are soft at the long end. This lens is sharp throughout its focal length range even wide open. It is equally as sharp as the Nikon 300mm f4 prime with a x1.4 teleconverter attached. The autofocus system is fast and accurate even for birds in flight photography. And the new generation vibration reduction system is excellent. Coupled with a medium sized DSLR it is light enough to carry around all day. It will also focus close enough to photograph Butterflies and insects. It is expensive but well worth the money in my opinion. 28 April 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Useful Lens I traded my 70-200 f 2.8mm lens for this new Nikon 80-400mm lens and in some way am a little disappointed with the decision, as the quality achieve with this lens despite what others may say, is still a mile off the quality you will be able to achieve with your prime lenses. Having said that it is a highly portable 400mm FX lens, 650 on a DX crop DSLR and only weighs a fraction of my 500mm f4, as such it makes it a very useful lens for days when you are spending a lot of time out in the field on foot as opposed to being set up snuggly in a hide. It is not as well built or rugged as the primes and does have a tendency to condensate on the outside when kept say in a cold car, which is a little irritating as it takes ages to equalise the temperatures and sort out. All in all I have had some half reasonable images out of the lens with my D800 so its not all bad, but as said above don't expect too much and don't sell a prime lens to purchase this one, you will end up regretting it. 05 January 2014
