Home installation, disposal and other delivery services

When you make a large purchase like a washing machine or a bed, paying for it isn't the end of the matter - you have to get the thing set up (and perhaps an old one taken away), and sometimes you may not have the time, expertise or just muscle to do that. We've a number of additional services designed to relieve you of those tasks, many of them performed by our specially-trained green van crews when they deliver to you. We also offer various services for computer, TV, freesat and home cinema product installation. For a little extra, why not be up and running with your new purchase as soon as possible?

Wet appliance & fridge door services

When you buy a washing machine, washer dryer, or dishwasher from us, whether freestanding or integrated (built-in), for £25 we can install it for you (for integrated/built-in the charge is £85). For £8 we can connect up a tumble dryer. We'll connect the appliance to the water and waste pipes, switch it on, and do a test wash to make sure it's all working properly.

If you buy a refrigerated appliance (except for American-style fridge freezers) from us, and you need to reverse the door/s to get the best fit in your kitchen, we can do that for you for £30 before we deliver it (as long as the wiring for door-mounted electronic controls doesn't run through the door hinges).

We'll remove and dispose of all packaging responsibly, and for a further £9 we can dispose of your disconnected and drained old machine - see the section on Disposal & recycling for more information.

You'll be offered the option to select the appropriate service in checkout when the product is being delivered by us, via our green van fleet. If the product is coming direct from a supplier, who may use a courier to deliver to you, these services aren't available and so will not be offered to you in checkout.

The small print - conditions of these services

  • Your water and electricity connections must be within one metre of the installation point for us to carry out this service.
  • It must be possible to turn off your mains water.
  • There needs to be adequate water pressure.
  • The installation shouldn't be in a bathroom, toilet or unheated outbuilding.
  • If your appliance is going under a counter, please check that there's at least a gap of 87cm between the floor and the underside of the worktop.

Cooking appliance installation

We can connect a freestanding electric (£65), gas (£75) or dual fuel (£95) cooker. We can also connect an integrated/built-under electric (£85) or gas (£95) oven. We can install an electric or induction hob for £85, or a gas hob for £95.

We'll disconnect your old appliance (regardless of fuel type), connect your new one, and give you a basic demonstration of your new appliance.

Extractor or circulatory-type cooker hoods can be installed for £85. We'll disconnect your old hood as part of this service as long as it involves changing like for like. For an extractor, we'll connect the hood to an existing extractor fan and the correct ducting.

For all appliances, we'll remove packaging if required, and for a further £9 we'll remove and dispose of your old appliance for recycling - find out more in the Disposal & recycling section.

You'll be offered the option to select the appropriate service in checkout when the product is being delivered by us via our green van fleet (rather than direct from a supplier, who'll use a courier to deliver to you).

Gas Safe Register

Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register, and our installation crew members are no exception. Gas Safe replaced CORGI, and you should only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances.

The small print - conditions of these services

  • We're unable to cut back work tops and remove carcasses to allow the change from an old integrated appliance to your new freestanding model
  • We can only connect your new appliance to an existing electric and/or gas supply within 1.5 metres of the installation location, with an accessible isolation switch
  • For electric and induction hobs and electric cookers, there must be an adequate electrical supply based on manufacturer's recommendations
  • There must also be an adequate gap (as per the manufacturer's recommendations) between the heat source and whatever is above it in your kitchen.
  • There can be no combustible materials (including paper, wood and Formica) to the rear of the heat source
  • If your worktop does need to be altered for a hob, we're only able to do this if it's wood-based as we're unable to alter corinth, granite or ceramic worktops
  • For gas hobs and gas or dual fuel cookers, if the product is destined for a flat, multi-user dwelling or shared occupancy building (including where a single room is let out), the item must have a Flame Suppressant Device (FSD)
  • The existing gas supply must be within 1.5m of the installation location and a 13amp electric supply within a metre
  • If you have a conservatory to the rear of the kitchen, this must have an air brick in the wall or additional ventilation
  • Our installers will have to interrupt your gas supply to allow a safe installation, so we'll endeavour to restart any gas appliances in your home. However, please note that we're not responsible for any appliance that fails to restart, including central heating and gas boilers.
  • For integrated ovens, the housing must be ready-assembled and be the correct dimensions for the new product, as we're unable to undertake carpentry to amend existing carcasses.
  • For both extractor and circulatory type cooker hoods, the 13amp electricity supply must be within a metre of the installation location
  • For an extractor, we'll connect the hood to an existing extractor fan and the correct ducting; as this is not supplied, you must already have the correct type and size of ducting kit. The aperture must be the correct dimensions for the hood, and for both types of hood the wall or ceiling must be of suitable construction to bear the weight. We won't expand or reduce vent holes, or install a hood where this might contravene the requirements of nearby appliances.

Lighting & product assembly services

When you buy lighting from our shops, our trained crew can install wall, ceiling or outdoor lights to an existing safe wiring point, on domestic premises. We'll check the polarity and earthing of the required circuit. The price of this service is £59 for the first light, and £45 for each additional light. All our installers are NICEIC-trained (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting). For £29, we'll assemble your new bedstead in the room of your choice. If you buy a gas barbecue from us, for an extra £30 we'll assemble it for you and deliver it so that you can get cooking straight away. These services are available when your product is delivered by our own green van crew rather than direct from a supplier. In each case we'll remove and dispose of all packaging responsibly.

The small print - conditions of these services

  • The lighting installation service exludes recessed lights or anything over 10' high
  • For safety we'll need to switch off mains power at the consumer board; this may mean you needing to reset timers and so on once we've finished the work. (Sorry, but we're not liable for products on other circuits that fail to work once power is reconnected)
  • If the light is for for outdoors or for the bathroom you'll need to check the IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The higher the rating, the more protected it is, and for outdoor or bathroom lighting you need a minimum IP44 rating; find out moreabout IP ratings
  • Please make sure that you have the correct bulbs before the crew arrives, as they don't keep a stock of them
  • We're unable to install on circuits with rubber or lead-sheathed wiring, or on any surface which represents a health and safety risk for the installers
  • For bedstead assembly, we cannot move or dismantle existing furniture or other items, and we need the location for the bedstead to be clear for our crew to access and work in
  • For barbecues, please make sure we have sufficient access to delivery your fully-assembled product, and that you already have a gas bottle in place

Disposal services

We offer responsible removal and recycling of a number of products when you have a new item delivered by our own green van crew rather than direct from a supplier. You can select this service option when it's offered to you on the product page as you're choosing your new model. We'll remove and recycle washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, cookers, cooker hoods and hobs for just £9. We'll also remove and recycle your old TV set for £9 (32" screens and over). For £24.95, we can remove and recycle mattresses and divan sets. (Sorry, this excludes bedsteads and headboards.)

The small print - conditions of these services

  • Disposal is only available on standard delivery services, so that excludes next timed premium services where products are delivered by third parties rather than our own green van fleet
  • Before our delivery crew arrives, please make sure the old appliance is empty of any water, and is safely disconnected from the water and electricity (or gas) supply
  • If it's a tumble dryer, please disconnect the vent hose or empty the condenser water tank
  • If disposing of a fridge or freezer, ensure it's completely defrosted, wiped dry and clear of food
  • For a TV, please make sure it's safely disconnected from the mains supply and any other equipment. such as a DVD player or digibox
  • Please note that we do reserve the right to refuse to collect any item we believe constitutes a health and safety risk to our employees, or anyone working on our behalf.

Recycling of batteries, electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

Since 1 July 2007, the UK's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations allow members of the public to deposit old electrical and electronic items at recycling sites across the UK, free of charge. Electrical and Electronic Equipment is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK, increasing by at least 5% each year. The public dispose of over 1.2 million tonnes of waste every year in the UK, and landfill sites are now reaching full capacity. Much of this waste can be recycled, and the resources recovered to make new consumer goods. The WEEE regulations aim to reduce the quantity of electrical and electronic items disposed of in this way, and will encourage everyone to play a part in protecting our environment for future generations. As retailers of electrical and electronic products, both John Lewis and Waitrose fully support this regulation, and we have joined together with some of the UK's leading electrical retailers to create and fund a new body - the Distributor Take-Back (DTS) scheme - which is helping to develop a new UK recycling network for waste electrical products. Over the next three years, the scheme will make available more than £10 million to establish and upgrade recycling facilities across the UK, so that customers can conveniently recycle old electrical appliances. To find your nearest recycling sites for waste electrical and electronic products, contact your local council, or visit www.recycle-more.co.uk and type your postcode into the recycling bank locator. Since 5 May 2009, the UK's Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations require those who manufacture, import or produce one tonne of batteries or those who place products containing batteries onto the UK market to be responsible for the collection, treatment and recycling of the waste batteries. In the UK, we use 600 million batteries every year - an average of 21 per household. In 2007 just 3% of batteries were being recycled, the rest were going to landfill. The UK is aiming to meet targets of 25% recycling of batteries by 2012 and 45% by 2016. Everything from AAA cells to mobile phone batteries and button cells used in hearing aids and watches, must be separated from household rubbish and placed into designated recycling bins in shops or other recycling points. Recycling facilities are available in all John Lewis and Waitrose shops. Our buyers are also aware of how this legislation impacts the products they select, and all our own-brand products which fall under the WEEE and batteries regulations are clearly identifiable with a crossed out wheelie-bin symbol. As a producer of electrical, electronic and battery-containing products, we are also members of producer compliance schemes which will take responsibility for recycling batteries and waste electrical and electronic products.
