Home services

Home installation, disposal and other delivery services

When you invest in a major purchase like a washing machine or a bed, you have to get your new product set up and perhaps an old one taken away. Sometimes you may not have the time, expertise or just muscle to do that. For a little extra, why not let us help you get up and running straight away?

We offer several additional services, many of them performed by our specially-trained green van crews when they deliver to you. You'll be offered the services in checkout. (Postcode exceptions apply where our crews don't deliver - please see last section.)

We also offer various services for computer, TV, freesat and home cinema product installation.

  • You'll be offered the option to select the appropriate service in checkout when the product is being delivered by us, via our green van fleet
  • If the product is coming direct from a supplier, who may use a courier to deliver to you, these services aren't always offered and so will not be presented to you in checkout; but you can call 08456 048 835 to check and order your appliance plus the service if it's available for that product.

The small print - what you need to know and do

  • Your water and electricity connections must be within one metre of the installation point for us to carry out this service
  • It must be possible to turn off your mains water
  • There needs to be adequate water pressure
  • The installation shouldn't be in a bathroom, toilet or unheated outbuilding
  • If your appliance is going under a counter, please check that there's a gap of at least 87cm between the floor and the underside of the worktop

Cooking appliance installation

Buying a cooking appliance from us?

Add an installation service and we'll disconnect your old appliance (regardless of fuel type), connect your new one, and give you a basic demonstration of your new appliance. For cooker hoods, we'll disconnect your old hood as long as it involves changing like for like. For an extractor, we'll connect the hood to an existing extractor fan and the correct ducting.

  • Freestanding electric/gas/dual fuel cookers £65/£75/£95
  • Integrated or built-under electric/gas ovens £85/£95
  • Electric or induction/gas hobs £85/£95

  • You'll be offered the option to select the appropriate service in checkout when the product is being delivered by us, via our green van fleet
  • If the product is coming direct from a supplier, who may use a courier to deliver to you, these services aren't always offered and so will not be presented to you in checkout; but you can call 08456 048 835 to check and order your appliance plus the service if it's available for that product
Gas Safe Register

Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register, and our installation crew members are no exception. Gas Safe replaced CORGI, and you should only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances.

The small print - what you need to know and do

  • We're unable to cut back work tops and remove carcasses to allow the change from an old integrated appliance to your new freestanding model
  • We can only connect your new appliance to an existing electric and/or gas supply within 1.5 metres of the installation location, with an accessible isolation switch
  • For electric and induction hobs and electric cookers, there must be an adequate electrical supply based on manufacturer's recommendations
  • There must also be an adequate gap (as per the manufacturer's recommendations) between the heat source and whatever is above it in your kitchen.
  • There can be no combustible materials (including paper, wood and Formica) to the rear of the heat source
  • If your worktop does need to be altered for a hob, we're only able to do this if it's wood-based as we're unable to alter corinth, granite or ceramic worktops
  • For gas hobs and gas or dual fuel cookers, if the product is destined for a flat, multi-user dwelling or shared occupancy building (including where a single room is let out), the item must have a Flame Suppressant Device (FSD)
  • The existing gas supply must be within 1.5m of the installation location and a 13amp electric supply within a metre
  • If you have a conservatory to the rear of the kitchen, this must have an air brick in the wall or additional ventilation
  • Our installers will have to interrupt your gas supply to allow a safe installation, so we'll endeavour to restart any gas appliances in your home. However, please note that we're not responsible for any appliance that fails to restart, including central heating and gas boilers.
  • For integrated ovens, the housing must be ready-assembled and be the correct dimensions for the new product, as we're unable to undertake carpentry to amend existing carcasses.
  • For both extractor and circulatory type cooker hoods, the 13amp electricity supply must be within a metre of the installation location
  • For an extractor, we'll connect the hood to an existing extractor fan and the correct ducting; as this is not supplied, you must already have the correct type and size of ducting kit. The aperture must be the correct dimensions for the hood, and for both types of hood the wall or ceiling must be of suitable construction to bear the weight. We won't expand or reduce vent holes, or install a hood where this might contravene the requirements of nearby appliances.

Lighting installation, bedstead and barbecue assembly services

When you buy lighting from our shops, here's what we offer:

  • Our trained crew can install wall, ceiling or outdoor lights to an existing safe wiring point, on domestic premises
  • They'll check the polarity and earthing of the required circuit
  • All our installers are NICEIC-trained (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting)
  • The price of this service is £59 for the first light, and £45 for each additional light

New bedstead assembly £29 in the room of your choice.

New gas barbecue assembly £30 in advance of delivery, so that you can get cooking straight away.

We'll remove and dispose of all packaging responsibly if required.

These services are available when your product is delivered by our own green van crew rather than direct from a supplier.

The small print - what you need to know and do

  • The lighting installation service excludes recessed lights or anything over 10' high
  • For safety we'll need to switch off mains power at the consumer board; this may mean you needing to reset timers and so on once we've finished the work. (Sorry, but we're not liable for products on other circuits that fail to work once power is reconnected)
  • If the light is for for outdoors or for the bathroom you'll need to check the IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The higher the rating, the more protected it is, and for outdoor or bathroom lighting you need a minimum IP44 rating; find out moreabout IP ratings
  • Please make sure that you have the correct bulbs before the crew arrives, as they don't keep a stock of them
  • We're unable to install on circuits with rubber or lead-sheathed wiring, or on any surface which represents a health and safety risk for the installers
  • For bedstead assembly, we cannot move or dismantle existing furniture or other items, and we need the location for the bedstead to be clear for our crew to access and work in
  • For barbecues, please make sure we have sufficient access to delivery your fully-assembled product, and that you already have a gas bottle in place

Disposal and recycling

We offer responsible removal and recycling of a number of products when you have a new item delivered by our own green van crew rather than direct from a supplier (which may be subject to availability).

You can select this service option when it's offered to you on the product page at the same time as you're choosing your new model.

Large appliance removal and recycle £9

  • includes washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, cookers, cooker hoods, hobs, and TV sets with 32" screens and over

Mattress and divan sets removal and recycle £24.95 (sorry, this excludes bedsteads and headboards)

  • If you order a new sofa in store, we can arrange for a free collection of your old sofa for the Furniture Re-use Network - find out more
  • The small print - what you need to know and do

    • Disposal is only available on standard delivery services, so that excludes next timed premium services where products are delivered by third parties rather than our own green van fleet
    • Before our delivery crew arrives, please make sure the old appliance is empty of any water, and is safely disconnected from the water and electricity (or gas) supply
    • If it's a tumble dryer, please disconnect the vent hose or empty the condenser water tank
    • If disposing of a fridge or freezer, ensure it's completely defrosted, wiped dry and clear of food
    • For a TV, please make sure it's safely disconnected from the mains supply and any other equipment. such as a DVD player or digibox
    • Please note that we do reserve the right to refuse to collect any item we believe constitutes a health and safety risk to our employees, or anyone working on our behalf.

Recycling of batteries, electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

Since 2007, the UK's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations allow members of the public to deposit old electrical and electronic items at recycling sites across the UK, free of charge.

Electrical and Electronic Equipment is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK, increasing by at least 5% each year.

    • The public dispose of over 1.2 million tonnes of waste every year in the UK, and landfill sites are now reaching full capacit
    • Much of this waste can be recycled, and the resources recovered to make new consumer goods.
    • The WEEE regulations aim to reduce the quantity of electrical and electronic items disposed of in this way, and will encourage everyone to play a part in protecting our environment for future generations.
    • As retailers of electrical and electronic products, both John Lewis and Waitrose fully support this regulation and are members of the Distributor Take-Back (DTS) scheme - which is helping to maintain a UK recycling network for waste electrical products.
    • To find your nearest recycling sites for waste electrical and electronic products, contact your local council, or visit www.recycle-more.co.uk and type your postcode into the recycling bank locator.

UK's Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations

Since 2009, these regulations require those who manufacture, import or produce one tonne of batteries, or those who place products containing batteries onto the UK market, to be responsible for the collection, treatment and recycling of the waste batteries.

    • In the UK, we use 600 million batteries every year - an average of 21 per household. In 2007 just 3% of batteries were being recycled, the rest were going to landfill. The UK is aiming to meet targets of 45% recycling of batteries by 2016.
    • Everything from AAA cells to mobile phone batteries and button cells used in hearing aids and watches, must be separated from household rubbish and placed into designated recycling bins in shops or other recycling points.
    • Recycling facilities are available in all John Lewis and Waitrose shops.
    • Our buyers are aware of how this legislation impacts the products they select, so all our own-brand products which fall under the WEEE and batteries regulations are clearly identifiable with a crossed out wheelie-bin symbol.
    • As a producer of electrical, electronic and battery-containing products, we are also members of producer compliance schemes which will take responsibility for recycling batteries and waste electrical and electronic products.

    Postcode exclusions

We're sorry that as these postcodes aren't served by our John Lewis green van fleet, we're generally unable to offer installation and disposal services in these areas. However, if you're buying an electrical appliance and installation isn't offered, please call 08456 048 835 before placing your order, as selected suppliers may be able to provide that service.
