Our shutter service

We offer the widest range of Clement Browne made-to-measure shutters, backed up by their expert design consultants and experienced installation team.

Clement Browne shutter displays are available to view in our shops shown below. (Our other shops are served by S:CRAFT shutters). You can discover the various options relating to timber type, colour, louvre size and louvre shape. Our in-store Partners will also be able to assist you in a price estimate as well as helping to arrange a free, no obligation home design appointment.

The home design appointment enables Clement Browne's expert designers to understand what's inspired you, and how you wish your shutters to look and operate. They'll take into account the style and period of your property ahead of discussing the various available options, and taking measurements to generate an accurate quotation.

The Clement Browne designer will visit you complete with numerous working models, and full collections of samples and colour swatches. They'll be able to answer all your questions so that you can make your selection with confidence.

Once you've ordered, Clement Browne will begin their manufacturing process, starting with a visit – at a time convenient to you – from a member of their installation team who'll take final measurements against which your shutters will be made. The same installer will be the person who comes to fit your shutters, which come complete with a 3-year warranty.

Please take a look at the full range of Clement Browne shutter installation options and material choices via the tabs above, or visit one of these John Lewis shops.

How shutters are made

Clement Browne shutters are made using a combination of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques and hand-crafted finishing touches. They're fully guaranteed for 3 years.

The wood used in these hardwood shutters is stored for 6 months, before kiln drying to allow the wood to settle before being treated. It's actually kiln-dried twice in a computer-controlled drying facility, to ensure the chance of the frame warping is greatly reduced.

Stiles are the side, vertical section of shutters; rather than producing these as solid pieces, Clement Browne opts to construct an engineered core. The wood is cut into strips, which are then bonded back together in opposing layers for even greater strength.

Clement Browne also uses mortice and tenon joinery between the stile and rail (the horizontal part of the shutter) which improves strength, minimises movement, and is far superior to standard dowel jointed timber.

Cheaper shutters use cheaper paints and stains and utilise less coats. Clement Browne shutters are made using a high quality, proprietary paint system specially developed, comprising 7 coats of paint or 6 coats of stain to give a tough, lustrous finish, and the final layer is UV-protected. Shutters are less susceptible to fading and yellowing as a result.

Clement Browne shutters are supplied with a large choice of frames to complement your home, and deliver an improved, stronger installation when compared to attaching shutter panels to battening.

Why choose shutters?

Clement Browne can help you create the look you've always wanted to match your décor, whether it is contemporary and sleek, traditional or colourful. All shutters are made-to-measure, so can be supplied for almost any shape and size of window.

Although we tend to associate shutters with traditional houses and rural living, they're also ideal for urban homes; they're popular choices for bedrooms, bathrooms and street facing windows. They come in a wide range of timbers, finishes and colours with a custom colour option that allows Clement Browne to match to your home's existing colour palette.

Shutters can provide complete privacy when shut, will allow you partial privacy to let the light in or can be opened completely to fully illuminate your room. Each panel can be independently adjusted to temper the light. Shutter panels can be divided into independently-controlled sections, allowing natural light in but keeping unwelcome attention out.

Shutters add an additional layer to your glazing, so they not only block out light, but help reduce noise levels too. They are low maintenance -quick and easy to clean -and are helpful for anyone with dust allergies, as they don't harbour dust in the way that curtains or fabric window coverings can do.

Shutters help keep you cool during the summer, but also add a thermal layer in the winter, retaining heat in your home. They're ideal for awkward shaped windows (even curved or angled windows, such as portholes and gable-ends), as they're specially made to fit.

Tilt options are varied, ranging from a traditional central tilt rod or an off-centre system, through to a completely hidden tilt mechanism. You may also wish to consider a remote controlled, motorised option for hard to reach areas and large spanning windows.

Get an idea of cost

As Clement Browne supplies a bespoke service and product, the first thing they need to fully understand is what you've been inspired by, how you wish your shutters to look and how you'd like them to operate. With this in mind, they offer a free, no-obligation home design appointment with one of their design experts.

However, you may want to have an indication of price before you go ahead. Our in-store Partners can help you calculate an approximate cost if you're able to provide measurements for your windows, and as long as they're square or rectangular in shape.

To do this:

Please record your measurements in millimetres

Take your width measurement (B) in three places, record the smallest

Take your height measurement (A) in three places, record the smallest
