Sound Bars

With TVs getting slimmer and built-in speakers getting smaller - choosing the right sound system is more important than ever. Sound bars add that extra audio punch to all your movies, games and TV programmes. More affordable and easier to set up than a full size speaker system, they don’t compromise on quality either.

Q & As

Panasonic Viera TX-L39E6B LED HD 1080p Smart TV, 39" with Freeview HD 4 5 8 8
Great TV for terrestial programmes but let down by poor apps offering First the positives: Excellent quality picture, very sharp and blacks are very black. Sound better than expected for thin rear mounted speakers. Easy to set up and use. Looks very smart and doesn't dominate the room. The downside. Limited viewing angle - fine if just the two of you but not a family TV since colours look washed out if viewing outside a 30 degree angle. Can't connect to an analogue Hi-Fi and only option is to connect is via a medium quality headphone line input! But sadly all new TVs are like this since they want to make you buy a sound bar... Worst failing is a very poor selection of apps. Yes it has BBC player and Netflix but that's your lot in terms of useful UK options. No Lovefilm, no ITV player, no channel 4 and no options to get apps like Blinkbox. And no ability to download any of these! If you go on the Panasonic forums you'll find people have been complaining for 2 years but nothing is in the offing. So if these options are key you'll have to buy LG, Sony or Samsung. 03 February 2014
Better than my local chain tv and hi-fi store Next to my office there is probably the best known chain of decent hi-fi and tv stores and I usually buy fro them as they are so helpful. This tv was out of stock there however and apart from no set import date, JL matched the free 5 yr guarantee and were a decent bit cheaper. Delivered as per the set time perfectly as well 26 November 2013
Good but I am fairly impressed with the HD picture quality and the wireless connectivity works well. The overall footprint is good too, not much bigger than my previous 32 inch TV. Most of the supplied apps are of little interest but some, such as Netflix, work well, streaming 1080 pictures smoothly over a relatively slow connection speed. On the down side; the sound quality of the built in speakers is truly dreadful, I had to buy a soundbar almost immediately. This works very well using the ARC connection but is effectively an extra cost. Also I have found that the optimum viewing angle is extremely limited. Viewed from directly in front of the centre of the screen, all is well. However just a few inches of movement left, right, up or down and there is a noticeable lightening of the image, much more so than my previous 7 year old Panasonic LCD. 09 October 2013
Brilliant Had this tv delivered from john Lewis a couple of weeks ago. Brilliant service. The tv is fantastic, the difference from our old tv, although HD ready is amazing. Thanks to all concerned. 28 August 2013
First class all round The picture on this 39" LED set, is excellent. Various aspects are good, such as it has both wired and wireless network available as standard. The set was tested upstairs in bedroom, for access to the house router, wireless, downstairs; worked without issue for, Iplayer, Netflix or Youtube. Don't be thrown by that example picture. If you want "traditional" tv view, of just the channel, it can be there as default. Turn on, without the menu / panels around it etc. I also own the Panasonic DMR-BWT720EB, freeview+HD / Bluray recorder. This I mention, as the TV set upstairs can wireless, access the recorder downstairs over your home network - so you can watch what you've recorded. Previous own was a 40" Sony Bravia. I'll say this Pansonic feels "small" in comparison; when seen in the room with no picture, just sat on the shelf. From couple meters away, the 1" difference; comparable to a two-pence piece, who cares - but that's not what makes it feel small. The lack of bulk, around the screen and underside reduce the excess bulk of this set: This 39" Panasonic w:88cm h:52cm Sony 40" Bravia [about 5 year old]: w:99cm h:65cm You can therefore fit a whole lot more Panasonic 6 series range, in the space you had older sets. Lastly, excellent delivery service from John Lewis. No extra charge, delivery window 7am-2pm offered. They pre-announced arrival with phone call that morning, and were to time given. 19 June 2013
Another Great Panasonic We thought, well my wife thought, we needed to upgrade our 6 year old 26" panasonic. It arrived as arranged and was an absolute doddle to set up both with the TV channels and the internet. The picture quality is superb and the HD channels are phenomenal. My only gripe is that the factory settings are way too bright for my taste but these can be easily altered. In fact you can set these for all functions independently. The sound quality is pretty good for such a slim TV and there is no need to get a sound bar to enjoy it. All in all a really good buy. 15 June 2013
Great TV Setup was seamless and the picture quality is excellent. Everything about the TV oozes quality. Delivery from John Lewis was also excellent 16 April 2013
Developed a fault within 24 hrs Did not get much time to use this TV as it developed a fault within 24 hrs of delivery. However I thought the TV to be of good design but poor quality. 09 March 2013
