Big expectations, Big dissapointment! Having experienced the majority of the new philips range and being thoroughly impressed with the L1 fidelios, I was expecting great things from its smaller brother..... Design and Comfort: These headphones have been well engineered and great care has been taken over the fit and finish. The materials used, alumium and faux leather give these cans a premium feel and are unlikely to be mistaken for anything else. The headband does not fold,as usual the headphones come with a fabric bag. the leather padding on the earpieces is as generous as it is comfortable. The dense material provides fantastic sound isolation and the clamping force is just right. With incremental measurements on the headband adding a nice finishing touch. The braided cable providing tangle free tough and durable use that also has an inline mic. Typically a 10cm cable dangles from the capsule, rather than just having a jack socket on the capsule itself. Sound Quality: Despite its looks, comfort and build, the sound is... well dark, so dark in fact treble muddies, rather than sparkles. While it could be considered a rich sound with deep bass, and pleasing midrange, these two ranges usually overlap and provide a presentation too muddled for anyone with a good ear. These dont respond well to equalization either from an ipod or my fiio e17. The music will sound distorted and more noise will be apparent in an attempt to add treble. Conclusion: These are aimed for casual listeners and they do make great portables superior to the likes of beats, by far. Fantastic build and looks but In the end though, even if you can forgive the sub par sound quality, I simply cannot justify their price tag, not when there are better established alternatives out there. 21 February 2013

A good pair of headphones, with some comfort issues Having read online about the Fidelio range, I was especially interested about these. As John Lewis are one of the only retailers of this line, I made a point of going into the Oxford Circus branch to give these a try. Not being an audiophile, I can't comment on the sound quality with any deep or meaningful understanding of the buzzwords which go with headphone reviews. So, from a laypersons perspective, I personally found the sound quality to be of a decent standard, with these clearly reproducing my music, with background instruments being prominent, even on lower quality MP3's. The amount of bass on these was good, but might be too strong for some people. A big selling-point for me, was sound leakage, and in the short time I had them, I came to the conclusion they really don't leak much sound at all, even when played at a reasonably high volume, which is definitely a pro if intended for day-to-day use / commuting. The overall quality of the headphones was very good indeed. The frame is metal, and the headband is leather, which provides a good quality feel. A point I especially liked is that the inside of the headphone has a ruler-esque measurement scale, allowing you to adjust the earphones to exactly the same amount on each side The ear cups are a nice soft leather, which meant I initially found them comfortable. However, having said all this, after extended periods of use, I did experience some discomfort wearing these in my right-ear, as the earphones can be quite fiddly to sit properly over your ears, as the two speakers are on a pivot, meaning they have quite a wide range of movement. In all, I felt that these were definitely a decent example of a higher-end headphone, however, given the issues with comfort, I decided to return these, and therefore, can only give these a score of 4/5. 25 July 2012
