Q & As

Philips HDTP-8540 1TB Freeview+ HD Digital TV Recorder 3.3 5 3 3
Looks good, works well, only one small (minor) niggle. We purchased this as we were fed up with Sky raising the subs prices and yet making so much pay per view. We felt Freeview was the way to go. We were really pleased with this, because it was connected by HDMI to the telly (but doesn't have to be, you can use scart) we were getting a far better picture from this little box than the Sky box (which was connected by scart) You get the channel number on the front of the box which we never had with the sky box so you could instantly see what was what. It was simplicity itself to set up, the instructions do say that to use BBCiplayer you need a lead to your router, but having had sky they sent a free wi-fi box to everyone and this plugs into the back of the Freeview box and works wirelessly . If they'd just put the nec gubbins in the box to be able to get ITV player as well it would be even better, we didn't go for the most expensive box on the market, more middle of the range, and I guess in this world you only get what you pay for and this is obviously a way of keeping the price low. However, with 1GB of memory for recording, and ease of use, I'd recommend this to anyone. We are very pleased with it. 13 August 2014
Good all-round performance works fine and does exactly what it says it will and I would say its a good machine and easy to install. 13 June 2014
Returned We took the product back because it repeatedly failed to actually record - whether selecting individual programmes, series linking or manually setting the time. It had a separate problem of repeatedly crashing requiring the whole thing to be turned off and on. We exchanged for a cheaper recorder which does the job perfectly. We've noticed that by comparison the remote for this Philips product feels very cheap by comparison. 05 February 2014
