Q & As

Pure Avalon 300R Connect Smart 1TB Wi-Fi Freeview+ HD Digital TV Recorder 3.6 5 5 5
Disappointing Despite persevering for 8 months I'm giving up! Too many persistent and unexplainable gremlins - recordings disappearing, scheduled recordings disappearing, no meaningful software upgrades, still only iPlayer of the mainstream on-demand channels. No online assistance for what must be recognised issues. It feels like Pure entered this market because they thought they ought to, but weren't ready to. We're going to John Lewis tomorrow to buy a replacement! Don't !! Ps - I am reasonably tech savvy! 08 December 2013
For amazing sound and picture quality Being very focused on picture and sound quality (displayed on a large plasma screen), I have been literrally amazed by both, full HD channels of course but suprinsingly upscaled SD channels too (even with the low bit-rates one) from day 1. Streaming media from a home network server gives also perfect results with many formats recognized (DLNA). The 3-D style user interface adds to the pleasure of navigating within the different menus which are very clearly understandable. More content in the music and on-demand services would be welcome. This has been promised in a future update, hopefully this will come soon! As new Freeview HD channels are on their way too, this will be another opportunity to enjoy this excellent receiver which I have owned for several weeks now. Again picture and sound from this receiver are quite exceptional, watching Freeview HD channels are definitely spectacular in my sincere opinion. 06 August 2013
Lovely product- In need of more online content ! Set up was relatively easy - [replaced a Sky+HD box - see note below]. Great TV pictures and excellent sound quality. BBC iPlayer and Youtube are very fast but I am disappointed the box does not have access to Sky's NOW TV or other services from Lovefilms or Netflix, Acetax, 4od etc... Changing channels is a pleasure to watch - the channels turn like a pages in a book .... Excellent menu system easy to navigate - Remote control feels cheap- however, the buttons are well laid out. A brilliant little package - needs more online content soon- PURE take note. [Note - when first switched on the avalon picked up all available Freeview channels & network connection in minutes - However, Initially had a problem getting the sound to work on some channels (a movie channel & channel 5#- we released the sky box it replaced handled sound via optical - on the avalon we turned HDMI sound off and sent sound via optical cable #with Dolby and DTS only enabled). Not sure if this a bug with the box or the way its set up locally.....] 22 March 2013
Just what we wanted! (1 issue) To clarify I didn't have the same problems as “S1mon”. With the exception of the 1 recording out of 12 that had recorded that wouldn't play, luckily I could just press "on demand" and watch it on the built on BBC IPlayer. Hopefully Pure will release a software update to repair. The initial TV Tuning was nice and fast, it found more channels than our old digi-box and with the addition of the HD channels was perfect, it even automatically got rid of all the welsh channels that we picked up. Streaming of Youtube was why we had it on pre-order and it doesn't disappoint, it streams instantly nearly no buffering, it plays the videos in the highest quality possible. You can watch all your subscriptions by just scrolling up and down, watch what’s trending etc. (we have BT Inifinity & wifi) It lets us record 2 TV shows at once, but you cannot watch a third. But if you’re out and 2 shows are on you wanted to watch overlap its perfect. Not to mention the massive hard drive for storage. Ways in which the box could be improved: -‘Qwerty’ keyboard on the cheap remote (there is a reason phones now have them). -Make it easier to record TV series to record, searched “worlds craziest” to record and it found nothing, but using the +24hrs on the TV guide there was “worlds craziest fools”… I knew this was a new product and a new venture for a “radio” producer when I pre-ordered it. After a few weeks I am still more than impressed with it and certainly won’t be returning it, as I still can’t find anything that can compete with it. 12 March 2013
Good in parts but not good enough. First impressions were good. Quality packaging, great design, solid build, quality instructions etc. All looked good as I connected it to the TV and internet. First signs that not all was well came in the auto tuning in. It took much longer than it should. Not helped by a very unintuitive UI as it searched and stored channels. Own goal here Pure – it made a painful process even worse and is unforgivable in these days of user friendly “APPs”. One it was all set up and working I tried iPlayer and uTube. Oh dear.... the speed and the buffering was so bad – no it wasn’t bad it was awful. Now before you ask – it was connected by a top quality Ethernet over mains plug and I get 11mbs on my Broadband so it’s not that. I also have a smart TV in the kitchen that is fine on uTube. So first black mark – you can’t really use it for iPlayer and uTube. I tried again in the following days and on some days it was watchable – just – on others it was just simply unusable. Next problem? The EPG. For some unfathomable reason Pure’s interface takes a big screen real estate and uses most of it for nothing of use. It relegates the actual EPG information to a window showing only a couple of hours for 4 or 5 channels. Try using that to see what’s on for an evening across all channels and I guarantee you’ll be reaching for the Radio Times! Final nail in the coffin? The box developed a serious problem in responding to the remote. The codes were being received as the little red light on the front flashed but the box did not do the requested action more times than it did. Often needing 5 presses before it would actually do the action. This made the box really totally unusable so it went back to John Lewis. Oh – I also had one failed recording in the 3 weeks I had it. The program recorded but wouldn’t play. This should be the best Freeview box on the market. So much of it is good - apart from the basics! Pure, fix it quickly! 11 March 2013
