Q & As

Pure Evoke 2S DAB Radio, Maple 4 5 7 7
Superb but Flawed I listen to Classic FM and BBC Radio 3 on DAB, as the FM Transmitter is over 40 miles away. I live 3 miles from the Digital 1 DAB transmitter in Whitby. Signal strength as expected is off the scale!! The Radio oozes quality and is finished to an impeccable standard. It sounds great on BBC Radio 1, two and 4, producing rich and warm tones. However on Classic FM and BBC Radio 3 there is some slight sound distortion, despite there being 100% showing on the signal strength meter, with a 0% error correction. Position of the Radio or its aerial made no difference. John Lewis were superb and offered to issue a refund or exchange. I decided on an exchange and chose the slightly cheaper Roberts 93i which is a DAB/FM and Internet Radio. It too is beautifully made and finished in high gloss piano black. Unlike the Pure, there is no hint of distortion on any DAB Channel. Needless to say that the Roberts has found a permanent home with me and will not be going back!! It is interesting to note that the Roberts 93i is a new model, and it has already sold out - not surprising really in view of its build, looks, versatility and outstanding sound!! John Lewis and Roberts are both winners for me!! 08 July 2014
New Radio Pleased with sound quality and range of volume on this, the second Pure DAB we have bought . Seems to take longer than our previous model to "tune in" though. 10 March 2014
Good sound, avoid for FM For its size, I found this model to have the best combination of quality of sound and layout/apearance of the dab radios at John Lewis. It's easy to use, has enough presets, dab reception is adequate. For the negatives...it's expensive, the start-up time (from standby) is a sluggish 6 seconds or so, and I'm not sure the rewind facility is particularly valuable. Worst is that on FM, I get a continual click-click-click that is linked to the display or other internal electronics - in that if I push buttons to change the display then the click responds before settling down to the regular, very annoying click-click-click. It was so extreme that I requested an exchange from John Lewis but the new one was exactly the same. You will find it mentioned by others if you Google for "Evoke 2s review fm interference". Others have said they get it when the fm reception is weak but i'm getting it in an area of pretty good reception. But purely (!) as a nice portable DAB radio, it's perhaps one of the better ones in a suprisingly poor field. 25 February 2014
Could be so much better Sound and build quality are excellent but ultimately all of that is let down by reliability. After 12 months of 30 mins a day usage the Radio started refusing to occasionally switch on. 3 months later it eventually died with the strong smell of burning plastic and a very hot case. Not very nice experience. Currently waiting on JL to repair/replace under their 2 year warranty. 22 November 2013
Very good sound It looks attractive but more importantly the sound is excellent and it can go up to a very high volume which is a blessing for me as I'm hard of hearing. I can hear it across a kitchen with all the noises of cooking 06 August 2013
Beautiful! Bought as a chrissy present for father in law. Mid jan and he is still talking about it. It s lovely. The classiest radio I have seen. 10 January 2013
Reliability lets it down Pros: Decent sound - better than other portable radios I've listened to Fairly easy to carry around, if a tad heavy Looks ok Rechargeable battery (at extra cost) Easy to use Strong signal strength Can connect MP3 player to it and also an auxillary speaker Cons: Pure seem to have issues with quality. Everything worked fine except the screen - no text is visible on the screen so it'll have to go back. Looking at other reviews and from experience of other Pure radios, reliability is an issue. Aerial doesn't have full rotation around 360 degrees Judging by the demo model in the shop, the words on the buttons rub off Otherwise fine but I've only had it a few hours and can't test it all properly due to the screen issue 22 November 2012
