The cherry blossom, 'Sakura', lends its name to a princess from long, long ago who was called Kono- Hane-Sakuya-Hime (blossoming-tree-blossom-princess). The legend tells that she was given this long name after she had fallen from heaven and landed right on top of a cherry tree.

Since then cherry blossom has been regarded by the Japanese as a symbol of happiness, love and the annual start of nature's reawakening.

The exuberant yet short-lasting blossoming period of the Sakura is celebrated lavishly: in the spring everyone goes out to walk about under the blossoming Sakura and to enjoy the beauty of its gently falling petals. This special phenomenon is called 'Hanami', or flower viewing.
