Q & As

ROBERTS Colour Stream DAB Internet Radio and iPod Dock 3.8 5 11 11
Really pleased I really liked this radio because of all of its features, I read the reviews, some people had had problems with the touch screen display but they had said all problems sorted under John Lewis 2year guarantee. I think I had already set my heart on it, so I bought it anyway. Anyway, absolutely no regrets, it a fantastic radio, as always with Roberts the sound quality is perfect . I had never considered Internet radio before and now I find myself mooching through all the stations, so many ! So if you have any doubts, don't, with John Lewis guarantee you can't go wrong . 19 July 2013
Does what it says I purchased this to use as an Internet radio. I haven't used the other functions. As an Internet radio I find it works very well indeed and produces a good quality sound. The operating screen is small but perfectly adequate. I have mine connected directly to the router so it is not operating by wifi signal. Overall a good value purchase. 08 November 2012
So far so good We already have a Roberts 53 so liked the style and general features/operation of the range. Colourstream is a great concept, nice package, good features, very simple & intuitive to set up (fortunately haven't had to open the fat instruction book yet), quick to connect to my wifi (which can't be said for all devices, e.g. printers), and much better sound than I was expecting given some reviewers' comments. Loses a star for the low-rent touch-screen - it's a bit too small, fiddly, and grainy. Roberts should remember the MMI and the sound are the two most important pieces of the product to most users. Would have liked to try one in my local JL first (Peterborough) but they don't stock them which is a shame, but delivery to local Waitrose is a boon! Ordered on Sunday, ready for collection by midday Monday - fantastic! 12 June 2012
Really wanted to like this. The title says it all here for me. I had one of these for some time before I returned it to JL. The concept it fantastic - internet radio, ipod dock, dab etc in one box, but I'm afraid that usability issues make this something of a dud for me. The touch screen idea is great, but it's too small and can be infuriatingly unresponsive. Many of the controls on screen are quite small so you end up pressing them many times until you hit the target. Then there are many times when the screen just appears to lock up completely and you press and press and nothing happens, this is sometimes accompanied with an egg timer icon that appears. In isolation this wouldn't be too bad, but it happens a lot. As well as the lockups, it had a habit of turning itself off and on again when streaming internet radio, no idea why and it appeared to be totally random. It would also appear to delete its settings, like preset stations and network settings. It grates a bit to have to reprogramme all your favourite stations every few days. The iPod dock worked fine but again controlling the thing was a pain. The remote gave control of the iPod to play/pause, navigate etc, but the Colourstream paused and locked so much you'd press a button a couple of times and the unit would jump ahead several screens before it stopped making you go back to the menu you wanted in the first place. Sound quality is OK but not a show-stopper. DAB reception is as good as any other DAB radio I've got in the house. FM was OK too, but the reception was not much to write home about. I did read somewhere that it is possible to fit an external aerial, but I didn't try. It looks pretty good, if a bit too big for your bedside table. I'm afraid the consistently poor controls just made this a pain to use. A nice idea, but poorly delivered. I couldn't honestly recommend. 17 February 2012
Versatile, easy to use but average sound Good machine that really met our needs in terms of space, ease of use and multifunctionality (ipod, DAB, Wifi) Sound is average... could be better for the price but would recommend the product. 16 November 2011
A great disappointment Because of the attractive specification I broke my rule never to buy any technological deviice when it first appears on the market. Reception of FM radio on the Colour Stream was very poor. Robert's comment was that this was essentially an internet radio and that I should not expect too much from the FM tuner but it might be worth trying a replacement. JL kindly provided this. No.2 was no better but I decided to accept this weakness. DAB reception was fine, internet setup was straight forward and reception good. However, after a few weeks the touch screen controls began to fail. Roberts provided No.3 via JL but, on delivery, the touch screen was inoperative! JL came to the rescue yet again, collected No.3 free of charge and provided a full refund of the purchase price. I have reverted to my cautious mode with respect to innovatios. . 07 July 2011
Beware touch screen frailty I bought the Roberts Colour Stream in January 2011 and, having used it to replace a radio/CD/tape unit, I have been very impressed with its ease of use. It has really revolutionised my radio listening experience in particular. Unfortunately, within the past week the touch screen has become unresponsive so the unit can only be controlled vis the remote control. This means that I will have to take the Colour Stream to my nearest John Lewis store for repair, meaning an inconvenient and unwanted trip to Cribbs Causeway. 07 July 2011
Brilliant! We bought the Colour Stream as a replacement radio / ipod dock in the kitchen and it's fantastic. The sound is good, but best part is the massive range of music you have access to with the ipod, internet radio, DAB etc. Easy to setup and very good signal quality. The touchscreen is easy to use - all round a great product with the benefit of the extended warranty from John Lewis - just in case. 06 July 2011
