In line with our timber policy, the wood frame is from sustainable managed sources.
Born in Russia in 1903, Rothko and his family emigrated to the US in 1913, fleeing violence against the Jews. Early figurative works reflect a preoccupation with political themes, as well as an interest in European Modernism developed as a student of Max Weber in New York. Paintings dating from Rothko’s time with Adolph Gottlieb and “The Ten”, in the mid 1930s show increased simplification of form. This ultimately led to Rothko’s turn to complete abstraction after the Second World War, which he practiced until his tragic suicide in 1970.
