Ruark MR1 Bluetooth Speaker System
I couldn't find better
I have been looking for a decent set of Bluetooth speakers for a while and I finally settled on these after also considering Sonos, Bose and Pure.
I read loads of reviews on loads of different speakers and then started to listen to them but this was very difficult because there was too much ambient noise in the store to really hear them properly and the physical layout of the speakers on shelves does nothing really to showcase them although you get an idea of how good they are (or not).
Back to the numerous reviews, others who had bought these all appeared to be very happy so I decided to buy them over the Pure speakers which had been my alternative choice.
After getting home and setting these up I can say, yes, these speakers are very good. Really really good and also quite small. They are clear with bright treble, a balanced mid-range and have a strong bass. They can also play at a very high volume without the usual distortion that is present on many other speakers of this type.
If you want to connect your device from its headphone socket with a cable you can. I struggled to hear a difference between this and the Bluetooth connection (which was far more convenient).
Should you need more bass you could add a subwoofer but I think that would loosen the windows... these are not weedy speakers as their size would suggest.
There is a small remote which allows you to change volume and input.
As with all decent speakers there is a consideration in terms of where to place them. They do sound better near a wall and on a solid surface; something that doesn't amplify the base such as a cabinet.
In summary, for a small set of speakers and as an alternative to a decent hi-fi these are a very good choice and I would highly recommend them.

These amazing little speakers sound fantastic!
It's hard to believe that such a full sound can come from cabinets as compact as these — they are much more like small hi-fi speakers than your average bluetooth/portable set. They are beautifully put together, and personally I don't think you can go wrong with the walnut finish.
The sound is great via the wireless Bluetooth connection, and they do a great job of connecting and reconnecting to devices such as smartphones, tablets, etc which have already been 'paired' to them. Even better though, is the sound through the wired input: I have a CD player connected to the input, and having a good quality source like this really makes them shine!
As they are active speakers with the amplification built-in, you can use them for many different purposes, and they can be easily moved around the house (an optional battery pack is also available if you want complete portability).
Once you've tried these out, you'll be looking for an excuse to get a set: "Hmm, we could really use these in the bedroom..." / "Wow, wouldn't the TV sound great with these plugged in..." / "Our laptop doesn't sound that great for music – we could hook up a set of these speakers in the den..."
Incidentally, should you have any reason to contact Ruark with a query, I can confirm that it's possible to speak with a real live (and helpful) person, not an automated call-centre menu! Highly recommended.

Take your ears to 11
Read all the reviews, compared everything on the market and then tested these in store at JL. Everything sounds great on these little gems - and I am picky and fussy. They have a retro cool about them which only adds to the whole package. You could not be disappointed in these... Fantastic

Fantastic dynamic sound
Very impressed, the sound quality is superb, with surprising powerful base considering the size of the unit. The sound is precise, and clear. I'm hearing sounds on discs that I have never heard before, and that's just utilising the Cd on a very average laptop. Another benefit is they are easy to move around the house so will be great to beef up sound from a flat screen TV.

Ruark strikes again.
Ruark bring us this offering in the active speaker market. These wont require separate amplification and simply require to be plugged into the mains and fed a source. This can be done via Bluetooth, the system on the Ruark MR1 has both A2DP and apt-X compatibility. The latter being able to stream higher quality music more effectively. The range from an ipod touch 4th gen was something like 50 metres in testing.
There is a line in, devices maybe connected though their headphone out. If your device is an ipod, connection via a digital dock (such as the pure i20 sold by john lewis, would improve sound quality significantly. The Mr1 maybe also connected to a laptop, TV, music system or preamp. Which is where their strength lies, being multi use speakers. An optional active subwoofer maybe connected also. An input level switch is also included to match output of musical sources (turntable for example).
Utilizing a class a-b amplifier, these speakers sport 20ws per channel. Once they are separated a good distance they provide fully immersive stereo sound. Don't let their diminutive size fool you, They can easily fill a large room quite adequately. They sound natural detailed and have plenty of weight, helped by the 75mm mid/bass unit. There signature is analytical enough to satisfy with top-quality inputs but forgiving with poorer alternatives.
They have a simple to use remote control and a responsive volume dial with has different colour LEDs letting you know which input is selected.
As an optional extra a battery pack may be fitted if you fancy taking these speakers out in the garden. etc.
