The best !!!

Use this as our bedside alarm clock and it's excellent. The sound is great and the alarms are gradual, increasing in volume so wakes you up very gently. I also love the fact that you can set the alarms up so they come on during week days and not at the weekends. No more forgetting to set it on Monday morning!. No tuning required - it's all done for you when you switch it on. I know it's a bit pricey but worth every penny as far as I'm concerned.

High quality design, appearance and function
I deliberated long over making a decision to buy a bedside radio. It came down to this Ruark R1 versus the Tivoli Audio 10. The latter has a remote speaker to provide stereo but I didn't like the idea of lying in bed and potentially listening to a stereo image that is imbalanced on my side of the bed! Ruark do make a stereo version that is self-contained but it would have been too wide for my bedside cabinet.
So I chose the Ruark R1 and am extremely pleased with its looks (I chose the glossy white) FM/AM/DAB/DAB+ and AUX (MP3 input). However most of all I love the very high quality sound which is rich in tone (with adjustable bass and treble) and clarity and the volume is more than adequate even at the 50% level.
There are two alarms with different times for weekdays and the weekend and the station (or aux input), is selectable for each and a with gradual volume increase. Five or ten minute snooze by single or double top-button tap.
The volume control in normal operation is unusual in that the top knob is jogged cw or acw in steps, rather than being turned to a position. The best way to use this is to jog the knob whilst watching the volume bar on the display.
There are a total of ten Program presets which is plenty for me but of course all stations are available by scanning (unless you select to restrict the number of DAB ones being scanned)
I recommend this radio without reservation. The price is fixed across all Ruark appointed dealers and I was happy to buy from John Lewis online especially as they had the one I wanted in stock.

Won't totally fill a room but very good for a small radio.
Bought for me as a birthday presnet to replace a 4 year old Pure One mini which has a broken volume control (have to do a series of things before you can adjust volume!).
These are my observations based on a day's usage - im very excited!
Small, fairly solid, very attractive and very good quality casing. I have the walnut one but loooove the blue one.
I find the volume very easy to use and responsive.
Instructions are very simple and useful.
Not massively loud but there is a "loud" feature when you go through menu. This is good and gives a great little boost.
Was slightly tempted today to send this back and buy the Ruark R2 as I didn't think this was loud enough but really, I did only want this to replace a one mini and thats exactly what its for light on the go listening/ moving room to room.
Also, I may use the line out to use this with my amplifier on our stereo from to time.
I think the volume goes up to 30 and I like the sound at 14 without the "loud" boost. For me, a good level for music but you can still talk easily.
I guess that for listening to a talk show, I might want it up to 17 - 20 if i was doing things but still wanted to hear talking. I have found if you go much louder than 17, with the loud function on, the radio seems to vibrate a touch and im not sure if its good for the radio.
Very impressive sound. You can + or - the bass and treble as you wish too, so you can choose when you have a lovely bass-y sound when its music time or not when you are listening to radio 4.
Sound is very rich and is much superior to the Pure one mini we have but is £100 more!
Think we will buy the battery pack which will allow us take outdoors when we want to.

If you have the money, choose this radio - you won't regret it!
We have three of these radios in our house. They look beautiful, sound great and work really well. A beautiful piece of worthwhile design and manufacturing!

Quality Dab/Dab+ radio with a warm rich sound
The radio has a very good rich sound. I find it a little bass heavy at its default ‘Normal’ setting, but turning the bass down to ‘0’ remedy’s that leaving a detailed, warm, rich sound from what is a fairly small box. The R1 MkII is a nicely finished Dab+ ready radio which looks and feels a quality unit. Due to the sound quality I find that I am using the radio more than I anticipated so I have added the battery pack and case to add portability available separately at additional expense.

great sound from a little box
A nicely finished DAB radio with a great sound and a clear display. Only 5 programmable stations though, but a good search facility.
Would recommend for the kitchen where space might be tight.

Don't dither. It's a no brainer!
After looking endlessly for the "perfect" clock radio, I went for this and I have not been disappointed. Yes, it's expensive but it is a beautiful piece, very easy to set up and completely intuitive so you are not reaching for the manual every five minutes.
Certain reviews comment that the light from the display is bright for a clock radio but I haven't found this.
