Ruark R4i DAB Audio iPod Integrated Music System
Good but keep spare batteries handy!
A good product but the sound produced would have been lost if we hadn't bought the speakers (which are absolutely superb) to go with it. The reason being is the the room we've put it in, is large with high ceilings and minimal furnishings. This makes it really difficult to get the depth & roundness of sound. Additional speakers were the only solution - which makes it a very expensive piece of kit.
One warning - if the batteries (AAAA) in the remote for some reason give up the ghost, the unit is rendered unusable! Not so bad if you can live without it for a few days but could be a disaster if you were having a party or live in a remote location. If you're going to buy this bit of kit, it makes sense to go & buy spare batteries at the same time. What would be a really nice gesture, would be for Ruark to supply a complementary set of spare batteries with the unit as a matter of course. Given the price of the R4i, a packet of batteries wouldn't hurt them.

It is a shame there are some unfavourable reviews, in my view this is an absolutely superb product. I was given the R4i with a smooth Walnut finish for my birthday in September and I am really pleased with the performance of the unit. The sound is outstanding and the controls are really easy to use. I chose the unit for its combined DAB, iPod and CD functionality and haven't been disappointed.

CD "Error" - Constant background Noise when in standby.
We searched for quite a while and finally went for the Ruark R4i Music system, it had good reviews and looked good with the Walnut surround.
I am very pleased with the sound quality, but the reliability is extremely disappointing as I have had 2 CD failures in the last 3 months, in which I replaced the first R4i for a new R4i using John Lewis`s very good exchange policy, but this unit failed one month later and now I am looking to replace this, possibly with a Bose?
The problem I get is when I eject the CD, the display shows "Ejecting CD", then an "Error" flashes up in the display. The CD does eject but you hear a constant noise, which appears to be the CD`s motor trying to stop but it does not, in a quiet room it is quite prominent.
As a sound system it is very good but if you need a CD option then this may not be for you!

Beware of the walnut finish
There appears to be a major problem with the model with the walnut casing. I have now taken delivery of 3 of these and all have the same problem, namely the supposedly hand finished casing has raised grain, making the surfaces rough and difficult to clean. If you follow Ruark's instructions to use a lint free cloth, then bits of cloth catch on the grain and are left on the surface. Ruark say it is normal for real wood to have a raised grain, which is rubbish in my opinion. Unfortunately, both the black and white ones look cheap in comparison even though they are both £50 more expensive. I have decided to keep the third walnut one as it was a present and goes perfectly with our decor, but will clean it with a light feather dusting.

I recently purchased the RuarkR41, for use with my Apple Ipod Classic, (admittedly now 6 years old) but still 5th generation and pristine condition and working perfectly on Bose, Sony and other good quality docking stations.
But on the Ruark R4i the "backlight" on the Ipod is automatically turned of after exactly 30 seconds, making navigation on the Ipod impossible, needing you to remove Ipod, turn off, turn on again and reset album / track etc. as required.
I contacted John Lewis technical support who put me in touch with Ruark . After speaking with a couple of assistants I was spoken to by Customer Services manager who informed me that their software does not recognise the "backlight" on the Ipod Classic and hence will not operate. They stated it was not returnable to themselves as this was part of the system. I took the Ipod Classic into my local John Lewis, trying it in various Ruark systems, all of them turning off the backlight after 30 seconds.
I have informed John Lewis technical services and recieved excellent back up advise and service with the offer of a full replacement

The Only Music System! Bar None!
It was the Bose Wave III until I read great reviews on this monster piece of kit. Sound quality, build, use ability and being British made make this the stand out music system you can buy at reasonable money. Get off Bose and join Ruark, you won't be disappointed!

One of the best music systems at this price.
A really well engineered piece of kit from Ruark. Formerly Vita audio. It has a Cd player, dab and fm radio tuner (telescopic aerial included for better reception) and an integrated Ipod dock which is the 30 pin version. This will not be compatible for ipod shuffles and the current gen Iphone and ipod touch/nano. However John Lewis also sell the lightning adaptor to make the latter compatible. What also seperates this unit apart is the expansion options. It contains an aux in, headphone out (3.5mm), Usb input (to read music media on flash keys) and a Line in and line out. The latter used to attach powered/active speakers. (the ruark Mr1 speakers, also sold by john lewis would be a good addition). The roto dial is a good addition though the range is a tad short. Its intuitive to use and the menu's and equalizers settings are easy to navigate. The whole unit wrapped in a sturdy retro metal and walnut suit. Musically the unit is top notch. Natural, smooth, with an expansive soundstage and fantastic stereo imaging. Its attention to detail and vocal performance being its harmonic delicacy to your ears. (A base adjustment dial also hides at the back of the unit.)
I heartily would recommend this unit to anyone serious about their audio willing to spend the money to get quality.

Delighted and Impressed!
We purchased this product after outstanding advice from a sales assistant at Peter Jones. Delivered today it is filling the house with astonishingly high quality sound. So simple to set up and use. Thank you John Lewis
