Rated 5 out of 5 by JT134 Excellent machine – worth waking up for in the morning!
I have just bought this Barista Express and am delighted. I was up and running within an hour and am enjoying experimenting with different coffee beans. I've also just become a popular destination with friends and relatives who love their coffee!
The machine heats up within 60 seconds (faster than my kettle), quickly grinds the coffee beans and creates an expresso with a rich crema. The steam jet is fun to play with and works well with the (supplied) steel milk jug, and when used for long enough creates a hot coffee.
There are a couple of points which might be awkward for some users, although I have found workarounds. First, the machine is designed to work with short cups. Second, the steamer takes some time to come up to full blast.
But I have had enormous fun using the machine and would strongly recommend it for anyone who loves coffee.

Rated 4 out of 5 by CazG Excellent present for a coffee fanatic
Bought this as a pressie for my hubbie's milestone birthday. He set it up (reasonably straight forward) and started making lovely coffees immediately. I'd say it takes a bit of time to produce a perfect brew but that's been part of the fun of having this machine. It certainly has become a conversation piece and I've certainly enjoyed providing feedback on the sample mugs!

We've had this for a month, so I can't comment on long term reliability. However, in every other way we're very pleased with this machine.
It is a good looking piece of kitchen equipment, if that bothers you! It is very well constructed with heavy high quality construction.
It's not simple to use - and I'd highly recommend spending an hour or so looking at the instructions. The great thing is that everything is easily adjustable, from the amount of coffee per shot, the fineness of the grind, the amount of water per shot etc, so that with some trial and error you can get a perfect espresso. The frother is also excellent, with plenty of power and nice flexible movement so you can get the most professional foam.
I like the drip tray that warns you when it gets full. If I had a complaint, the drip tray is on the small side considering that quite a bit of water gets discharged into the tray during warming up.
Overall, we're very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Helmac11 Excellent product & Exceptional quality
Having purchased the Barista Express, i am very pleased to say that i have no regrets.
With a vast range of similar products on the market, the Sage Barista bean-to-cup machine is up there and for those wishing to invest a substantial, albeit reasonable amount of money on such a machine, then look no further. I'm delighted with my latte's and espresso's.
Just be a little patient at the beginning with experimentation; coffee beans, grind setting, etc and you will eventually feel like a barista maestro yourself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by gabortabori Very Impressed!
Purchased this as our old Delonghi EC 820.B gave up the ghost after about 2 years heavy service.
It is a considerable jump up in cost, but this is also justified in the obvious improved quality of machine and the resulting coffee.
Whilst Sage is just another name for Breville (which I was very dubious about in terms of what the quality would be like), I have to admit that my concerns over quality seem to be unfounded. Whether it will stand the test of time is still to be seen, but I do have the added assurance of the extended 3 year John Lewis guarantee, which I would absolutely recommend for any coffee machine.
Set-up takes a while (I would definitely recommend following the set-up instructions closely), but it is all quite simple and I made my first coffee after apprx 20mins.
The integrated coffee grinder is much quieter than my previous stand-alone coffee grinder and produces a very consistent grind. The fact that it grinds directly into the portafilter means no mess.
The portafilter is reassuringly heavy and has a quality feel. Inserting the filter into the headset is simple also.
The steam wand is very manoeuvrable and provides decent steam, producing a great froth.
Whilst this model doesn't have the dual boiler function of the more expensive model, it does have an auto steam purge function that ensures the machine is ready to make another espresso almost immediately after using the steam function (no waiting for the boiler to cool down).
The resulting coffee from this machine is actually very good and is much, much better than the espresso produced by our old Delonghi.
All in all very, very satisfied with the purchase to date.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Haylo Great machine that delivers great coffee
This might be somewhat of a holy grail machine for many people.
I was moving up from my first machine which was a Magimix L'expresso which we'd had for almost 10 years. It dripped and was messy but it never produced bad coffee. After a while though the drips turned into leaks and we needed a new machine
The Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, etc... The Rancillio has a reputation for needing some skill to use. This might be fine for me, but not my wife who isn't interested in tamp pressure or temperature surfing. The Gaggia Classic was being pushed down market with new models.
- It's (almost) as easy to use as a fully automatic bean to cup - my 5 year old can make a great coffee with this (with a little supervision of course!)
- If you want to experiment with pressure, grind, amount, temperature, etc you can make the process as custom as you wish.
- Temperature PID for constant temperature. Adjustable + or - 2 degrees.
- It's sturdy, looks great (better than separate grinder and machine in our small kitchen) and easy to keep clean
- Well equipped - both pressurised and non-pressurised baskets, plus lots of accessories
- The pressure gauge is really useful
- The milk frothing is indescribably brilliant
What do you need to know
- The setup of the machine involves quite a bit of cleaning and pumping through of water. From unpacking to actually using will take about an hour.
- The default setting for the coffee didn't seem hot enough for me but was adjustable using the menus.
- The first dozen coffees I produced tasted thin and bitter. I suspect I didn't fully complete the cleaning process and some detergent may have remained in the machine. It's possible, I was over tamping the coffee - it needs a confident but not heavy press down (think rubber stamp).
As easy as a bean to cup but a machine that can grow with your abilities and interest.

This is an absolutely cracking piece of kit. It takes a bit of initial fiddling sround to get the grind setting and amounts correct for the beans but once you get used to it it makes proper coffee as good as the coffee shop. Milk wand works really well and the machine is very high quality and well made. Instructions are excellent and there are a couple of helpful videos on the sage website that help with initial set up. This replaced my last bean to cup Krups machine which was not a patch on this in terms of the coffee it makes and i reckon a lot more reliable as less moving parts.
