Sage by Heston Blumenthal Barista Express Bean-to-Cup Coffee Machine, Silver

Product information

Developed by Sage by Heston Blumenthal, the Barista Express is here to give you the ultimate cup of coffee. Designed on the principle that ingredients taste better when fresh, the Barista Express prevents degradation of the quality of beans by grinding them directly into the filter for you, to extract their full flavour. The whole process, from bean to coffee, takes less than a minute.

Use either beans or pre-ground beans, with the conical burr grinder allowing for efficient grinding at high speeds. 15 grind settings mean you can have your beans as coarse or fine as you want them.

The bean hopper will hold 250 grams, enough for 25 shots of espresso, while the water tank can carry 2 litres, with integrated water filtration.

The Thermacoil heating system includes an adjustable temperature control, so you can keep the temperature in line with the coffee you want and prevent loss of flavour from overheating.

The powerful 15 bar pressure system builds gradually to provide even extraction of coffee, giving you a rich, flavoursome drink.

A 480ml stainless steel frothing jug and high power milk frothing arm will help provide you with enhanced taste for your coffee.

The hot water dispenser will provide you with instantly hot water, great for black coffees, while the 6 cup warming tray will make sure a cold cup doesn’t detract from your enjoyment.

Q & As

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 42 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Four months in - still brilliant We had one of those nasty Nespresso things for years. This Sage is altogether in a different league for taste (and lower running costs and environmental waste). I watched the on-line video before I started using it and I don't think we have had a bad cup of coffee out of it, although fresh beans are essential. 04 October 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Poor build issues I really want to love this machine. In fact I do. It pulls great shots (with fresh beans) for the price and is a joy to use (when everything works properly). But I hate it too. I'm on my second machine (within the space of 18 months) after a fault with the first one. And now the second machine has exactly the same issue. There is a poor build quality that results in a leak underneath the water tank. So all pressure is lost, and nothing ends up coming through the portafilter. Despite regular cleaning and descaling nothing seems to stop the leak from eventually appearing. So disappointing. 28 September 2015

Rated 5 out of 5 by If you like coffee this is your machine When the old expresso machine expressed its last drop, it forced me into researching for a new one. Didn't consider this one at first -way to expensive, however,it does the business in every way. I enjoy the process of making the coffee, the obsession of getting it right and when you do the coffee is fantastic !! It can be a bit messy and it does need looking after, but thats part of the fun ! 21 July 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Expensive mistake I was so excited to get this machine as I have the Sage tea maker which I love. However, this coffee machine is very fiddly and temperamental. Despite being careful and following the instructions to the letter, I have not been able to make decent coffee more than once. It is inconsistent and despite no change to settings and using fresh beans I have been unable to replicate the first nice cup it produced. Not only does the coffee vary from cup to cup, the milk frother produced creamy milk once and then never again. How I wish I had bought the separate grinder and gone for a filter or cafetiere system instead of wasting a lot of money on this espresso machine. 18 July 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by It really is worth the money I have owned several coffee machines over the years, three, to be precise. I was sceptical about buying an all-in-one product as, ever since the days of phones with cassette tape answering machines (remember those?) I had worries about one part breaking rendering the rest of the machine useless. After some very thorough research, both online and instore, I eventually settled on this machine. Why? Primarily because of both the claimed quality of the burr grinder (entirely warranted) but also the advantage of having a pressure gauge (surprisingly, the more expensive model omits the dial gauge - perhaps it has a digital one?). Before owning this machine I used best brand, vacuum packed, pre-ground espresso coffee and used to sneer at those who found instant coffee palatable. Having now had this beauty at home for quite a while, I can honestly say that I really struggled to use up the last of that pre-ground stuff, which tasted flat, sour and lifeless compared to exceptional fresh espresso extraction that this machine was producing. I am very pleased to report, so far, so good. It is built like an absolute tank and I have every faith it will provide many years of excellent service. Sage products are made by Breville (i.e. easy access to spares in years to come). I also bought the matching knock-out box and am thinking about buying other Sage products to replace some old faithful items. If the rest of the Sage range performs as well as this coffee machine, they win hands down on looks - and I'm a sucker for continuity (but form must follow function). Overall, this is a joy to use. Easy to refill and clean and it's clear that much thought has gone into every little part of it, from little pop up 'empty me' drip tray sign to the magnetically retained metal tamper. Beautifully designed, solidly engineered and fairly priced considering the quality of pour achievable. I don't use the steamer much but, if it were legal to marry this machine, well... say no more. 16 July 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by best machine on the market i have had this for 6 weeks now,i wont bore you by telling you all the same stories but give you a few tips.Always use the freshest beans you can i have a good roaster in gloucester (e a coffee) as supermarket beans could have been on the shelf for months, buy a milk thermometer to get the same temp every time and use a wet cloth to clean the milk wand, other than that once you get your settings the way you want them sit back and enjoy the best coffee you can make yourself at home 17 June 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent machine – worth waking up for in the morning! I have just bought this Barista Express and am delighted. I was up and running within an hour and am enjoying experimenting with different coffee beans. I've also just become a popular destination with friends and relatives who love their coffee! The machine heats up within 60 seconds (faster than my kettle), quickly grinds the coffee beans and creates an expresso with a rich crema. The steam jet is fun to play with and works well with the (supplied) steel milk jug, and when used for long enough creates a hot coffee. There are a couple of points which might be awkward for some users, although I have found workarounds. First, the machine is designed to work with short cups. Second, the steamer takes some time to come up to full blast. But I have had enormous fun using the machine and would strongly recommend it for anyone who loves coffee. 26 May 2015
