Rated 5 out of 5 by Tom129 Really improves tv sound
Had this Soundbar for 2 months now and I am really pleased with its performance.
Yes, it only has an optical connection (supplied) and no HDMI connection but I was aware of this beforehand. I have no optical connection on my tv (only 4 years old) so had to make the connection via the Sky HD box. Not ideal, especially when trying to play the DVD recorder but it works well. The Sky controller, controls the volume as well, or you can use the volume switch on the side of the Soundbar. Because it is connected to the Sky box I have to either switch off the Soundbar when turning off the tv or put Sky into standby mode.
The sound output is superb and all settings are via my pc. It's also great being able to play music from the pc direct into the lounge (when the tv is not on!).
I have now transferred all my CD's onto the pc and have also bought a Play 1 from JL, so have music in at least two rooms of the house. I will add more Play 1's in due course, which of course can all be grouped together.
For some reason, I have had on a couple occasions where the Sonos system could not find the router. I had to switch the router off and on for this to be rectified. An e-mail to Sonos customer support was responded to very quickly and they suggested wiring one of the speakers direct to the router which I have now done with the Play 1, as it sits very close to the router.
If you are thinking about purchasing this Soundbar, then I would suggest you look at all the reviews on other websites.

Rated 1 out of 5 by andymo123 BEWARE!!! Unable to play 5.1 surround sound!!
I bought this product less than two months ago, and while reasonably happy with the sound I decided to invest in a sub woofer (obtained from another retailer) to match up with my existing two Play1s.
Everything hooked up fine, but the optical feed from the TV only sends a stereo signal to the Sonos system, and there is no option to deliver 5.1 via HDMI.
We have a Sky TV box and a BluRay player, so it isn't an option to connect these direct to the Playbar as there is only one input. In addition the Playbar doesn't support DTS soundtracks, rendering some of our BluRay disks unplayable (no sound whatsoever!!).
All in all this product isn't capable of producing the promised surround sound output and leaves me significantly out of pocket for a "pseudo surround sound" experience. Less expensive options would have delivered a significantly better experience.
I am not a happy chappy in the least!!
Poor show Sonos for pushing a product with such severe limitations, and poor show John Lewis for not being clearer about these limitations when I enquired about the product in the shop.
It was just before Christmas when I bought the Playbar, and quite frankly the sales staff seemed more interested in making the sale than explaining in detail what I was purchasing.
A very disgruntled customer!!!
Please understand the limitations of this product before parting with your hard earned cash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by AT121 A brilliant addition
We already had two Sonos Play 1's so were already happy with the quality of Sonos products. We wanted to buy a new tele in the sales so did some pre-Christmas research. It just so happened that Sonos were demonstrating this that day. We weren't considering any alternatives but it was great to hear it in action. We were instantly sold. Really neat features like the voice enhancement and the night time bass reduction are handy. I also like being able to turn the volume down from my PC when my husband has got the sound too loud! Another good feature is grouping the player with the speaker in the kitchen so I can still here while I'm slaving away!
The sound quality is good.
One thing to be aware of, if you have an "old" DVD player like ours (only 8 years old) it may not play sound without directly linking the Optical cable to the DVD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Barbersdan Wife and sound quality
The beauty of using the Sonos playbar is that you get good quality sound and your wife will probably allow it in the sitting room because it looks OK and not obtrusive. Although the quality of the sound is not exceptional from the TV because most TVs don't provide a good enough signal, I find that Radio 3 through the internet is superb; according to an article in The Guardian this is because BBC is streaming Radio 3 at 320kbps and in addition uses something called Advanced Audio Coding. If you then add a subwoofer it can be hidden - mine is behind the TV - and it really adds depth and breadth to all types of music - not just rock!

Rated 1 out of 5 by MoodyMan So disappointed with this
As an avid Sonos fan I was very much looking forward to getting a Playbar in the living room and was excited to finally purchase one from my local John Lewis store on Friday. Installation was as expected hassle free, I then popped into my Sky HD box menu, changed HDMI audio from 'stereo' to 'Dolby', swapped to a channel that was airing a Dolby Digital 5.1 programme and sat back to enjoy my new toy.
However I was shocked to find that the Playbar was only receiving stereo feed from my TV as opposed to the Dolby 5.1 it should have been seeing (confirmed via Settings / About My Sonos System on iOS app). I subsequently discovered to my deep disappointment that my television only outputted PCM 2.0 (ie. stereo) through the digital optical output from devices attached via HDMI. My initial thought was this was a Panasonic issue only however further investigation confirmed that the vast majority of TVs cannot output anything other than regular stereo from on the optical out. This is even true of the latest models. This coupled with the fact that the Playbar only has an optical input means my setup (and and the majority of other Playbar owners) is severely crippled ie. fake 5.1.
Worse was to follow when I tried to watch a Blu-ray DVD with a DTS only soundtrack. Absolutely no sound from the Playbar because it does not support this format! Unbelievable.
Further research has come up with workarounds for these serious problems (purchasing a Blu-ray player that can transcode DTS to Dolby 5.1 on the fly, purchasing one of the few TVs that allows HDMI devices to bypass via the optical output or an optical switcher that would allow each device to be plugged into the Playbar instead of the TV.
None of these appeal, and given the fact that in my opinion the Playbar is to all intents and purposes already obsolete due to it’s inability to decode DTS / DTS-HD I very reluctantly boxed it back up again and am keeping my fingers crossed I will be able to obtain a refund tomorrow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mike786 Playbar is great
I bought my playbar 2 weeks ago now from the Stratford store and the soundbar itself is great but i was shocked with the lack of knowledge that the staff had in the store I was expected to go and demo the product myself in the store with no help from the staff. If you are looking to purchase a Sonos playbar from Johnlewis i would highly recommend you do your own research as the staff are clueless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Charlotte1978 Amazing sound
We waited more than a year to buy the Playbar as we already had a Play 5, 3 and 1. I am not disappointed at all - we have just spent 15 minutes literally blowing the roof off our house.
When watching tv you get a better sound than normal, but the real difference is when watching films or listening to music - the sounds is far more stereo than anything we had heard before and we have had all sorts of surround systems over the years.
Next step is to get the sub-woofer and then we will need to get a new roof for our house!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Moakesy Great product, good sound
Finally purchased the Playbar after some months considering the options.
Setup is simple, with the App guiding you through the process...all done in minutes.
The sound is good and certainly better than the standard TV speakers on my Samsung. The Playbar is used all the time, no matter what you watch, whereas the surround sound setup I had before would only be used for films or something I thought would benefit from the surround sound effect. You get more use out of it.
I also wanted to be able to play music from my iPad easily, and the Playbar does this very well. The Sonos app is fine, especially with the free 12 month subscription to Deezer (much better than Spotify). I find the sound fills the large room easily.
Having purchased the Playbar first, I quickly added a Play 3 and a Play 1 for other rooms of the house. That is when Sonos really comes into it's own. The ease of use, having music around the house, switching different rooms on and off is what Sonos is really about. I can easily see us adding additional units to the system over time.
For pure hi-fi sound in a single room, there are better systems available for similar money, but for a good quality sound from a flexible, multi-room system you use every single day, I cannot praise Sonos highly enough!
