Product information

Bring the detail of 4K Ultra HD to your home with the Sony X8505 TV. Along with an image four times sharper than Full HD, you can enjoy streaming movies, 3D viewing and connected features like TweetView to keep you up to date.

Experience 4K
With four times more detail than Full HD, 4K gives stunningly natural images, not pixels. Dramatically higher image quality means that you can sit closer to the screen, filling more of your field of view until the screen disappears, and you’re enjoying an at-the-movies experience.

Social viewing
Enhance your viewing experience by seeing tweets about what you’re watching, while sharing the moment with friends and families through Skype. Sony’s unique echo cancelling ensures clear conversations while you’re in front of the screen.

Built-in camera
Built-in Full HD camera features Sony's 'Exmor R for TV' sensor, giving friends and family a clear, crisp view while you chat—even in dim rooms. New echo-cancelling technology ensures remarkably clear audio while watching TV and Skyping.

Football mode
Get the match-day experience. Live Football Mode automatically adjusts sound settings so they're closer to an authentic stadium experience. The sleek new interface even integrates news and highlights from various sources, including FIFA.

One-Flick control
Control your world of content with BRAVIA’s intuitive interface. Flick through TV channels, videos, photos or even Internet content. Find your favourite content instantly with quick TV start-up and speedy app launch.

Amazing sound
Hear clear, full-range sound that comes from a long duct inside the high-capacity speaker design. Audio frequencies resonate accurately through its extended, pipe-like structure, to deliver pure, solid bass with all your favourite entertainment.

Sound Bars

With TVs getting slimmer and built-in speakers getting smaller - choosing the right sound system is more important than ever. Sound bars add that extra audio punch to all your movies, games and TV programmes. More affordable and easier to set up than a full size speaker system, they don’t compromise on quality either.

Q & As

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Almost perfect TV - exceptional service Although it's hard to say too many bad things about the picture quality of the Sony X85, unfortunately the set I received had some screen uniformity issues that became very evident when viewing in a darkened room. Fortunately for me John Lewis (who were good enough to send someone to my home to properly investigate what the issue might be) deemed the problem a fault. Edge lit LED TVs are always bound to have a very small degree of light bleed in the corners, but most of the time these are hardly noticeable, especially when viewing in lit conditions. Though as I mainly watch films in a blackened cinema type environment the grey clouding in the corners of the screen was just too noticeable (even after calibrating various settings to improve the situation). I should stress though that there's a good chance this wouldn't bother most people and that the Sony excels picture wise in every other way; especially in it's motion handling and complete lack of judder / blurring, even in fast paced scenes. In this regard it's better than any other brand I've come across. The replacement set I received from John Lewis was almost identical, which is either just very bad luck on my part, or it's a particular issue with this model (I'm guessing probably the former). The main reason I'm writing this review is just to praise how the staff at John Lewis have handled the situation - it's not very often you have a sense that sales staff genuinely want to make sure you are happy with your purchase, and to be honest they have bent over backwards to try to do everything right. I wouldn't hesitate for one minute to buy from them again. And I probably will! 24 February 2015

Rated 4 out of 5 Up-grading TV quality. Nice bigger size TV with great picture quality. Can't expect super sound on these narrow TV's so if you wan't higher definition you need a separate sound system. Delivery from J.Lewis excellent. 17 December 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Sony Bravia 49" TV and Soundbar A really impressive TV with fantastic picture however don't be fooled by the description 'Bluetooth Soundbar'. Although the soundbar is 'Bluetooth' and so is the TV they don't speak the same language and therefore don't connect other than by the optical cable. I can connect other devices to the soundbar but nothing I have connects to the TV. This should be made clearer 28 November 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sony: dependable as ever My position is similar to at least one other reviewer and millions of Sony customers. I purchased a modern, practically state of the art consumer product to replace another by the same manufacturer, which had given years of fault-free service, but was one that I'd simply got tired of looking at, a bit like an old sofa. I did better by replacing it and so far (after only a few days admittedly) have no regrets about doing so. The colour palette and contrast range results provided by the TV are a marked improvement on what I'd seen previously from a 40 inch HD-ready model bought during 2006. Although network TV broadcasts in Europe are still generally no better than 1080i, upscaling of the pictures ensures that rendering is sharp, vibrant and detailed in every respect. To be honest, I found the default colours far too punchy, particularly the red tones. I have not played around with individual colour channels, but reduced both the overall contrast and saturation levels. There is a plethora of individual adjustments that can be made and it's useful to be able to do that for individual HDMI inputs, because a Blu-ray disc player will vary in the look of its output from a cable TV box, for example. Colours especially are very personal and your own tastes may differ markedly from mine. But don't be intimidated by what you see to begin with, because it can be changed with a little patience and perseverance. Still referring to HDMI inputs, be warned that all the connections on the back of the TV are on one side, and in my own case the wrong side for my units and existing cables, all of which are currently too short. They're cheap and easy enough to replace though. My 'smart TV' options are currently very limited in Portugal due to broadcasting restrictions. The UK is far better served in this respect. But in any case, this is an excellent future-proof TV and a very satisfying purchase. 05 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Truly impressive We had an opportunity to upgraded from our 40" Sony we had owned for a few years. This 49" is a little wider and slightly lower than the old TV, so the impact in the room is much the same thanks to the narrower borders. Narrower borders have a very good impact. The picture is fantastic. We did not compare brands because we have been happy with Sony before but concentrated on whether to spend more on the 4k TV compared with other Sony models. We are glad we did. It does emphasise the difference between SD and HD more, but both are marked improvements. I am still adjusting my 'acceptance' of this screen because I tend to think 'wow, look at the image' rather than concentrate on the programme itself. That will change. We use the optical sound output and the sound is an improvement too. It found the wifi connection very easily and can then connect to netflix and websites such as BBC sport very easily and reliably. Displaying photos through the USB port was simple as well. The only downside is that the TV and functions take longer to 'boot up' than previously, but this is generally not a problem to worry us. Not tried to find any 4k content yet, but very happy with the SD and HD through Freeview and recorded programmes and DVD through a bluray player. 28 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by 4k - Worth the extra cost! I've recently purchased this TV and I've got to say that at the current price, it's a bargain. The picture quality is outstanding, 4k really makes a massive difference to the clarity and level of detail in Photos and Video. I know that there isn't much 4k content right now but I've been streaming Netflix 4k and the quality is amazing. Finally a TV at a great price with excellent picture quality! 06 August 2014
