Sound Bars

With TVs getting slimmer and built-in speakers getting smaller - choosing the right sound system is more important than ever. Sound bars add that extra audio punch to all your movies, games and TV programmes. More affordable and easier to set up than a full size speaker system, they don’t compromise on quality either.

Q & As

Sony Bravia KDL42W8 LED HD 1080p 3D Smart TV, 42" with Freeview HD & 2x 3D Glasses 4.2 5 22 22
Pretty impressive Impressed with this, but do have issues with changing channels due to my broadband provider's remote control. 16 September 2014
What a disappointment We purchased this TV on 23/5/14 from John Lewis' Nottingham store, and we can honestly say it's a huge disappointment. Pros: As always with Sony, excellent picture quality and the sound quality is very good. Cons. 1. When taking the TV off standby, you cannot change channels or view either of the two EPG options available for about 15 seconds as the TV is clearly going through some sort of initialisation. 2. On both of the EPG options available the response is painfully slow. 3. Browser performance is non-existent; it's back to the era of the 'World Wide Wait' here and is completely unusable. We have an excellent BT HOME HUB modem/router with 802.11.n wireless functionality and a 16mbps broadband connection and have no problem with other connected devices. 4. We did't realise before purchasing the TV that Sony only support BBC iPlayer and 5 On Demand catchup channels. WHY? 5. Finally, with the free sound bar activated (and only in this mode) there is frequent word clipping after a period of silence, most noticeably when the commercial channel we're watching goes from one advert to another. This is an obvious problem with the squelch electronic circuitry. We have never before recommended that anyone avoid purchasing a product, but we reluctantly have to so with this one for the above reasons. 07 September 2014
Smart sleek TV Great picture. Stylish looks. Good price. Free soundbar a bonus. 02 September 2014
Sony Bravia KDL428W Television Bought this TV to replace our old Sony Bravia. Very pleased - excellent picture and sound, as expected. Would recommend. Also great service and delivery from John Lewis. 02 September 2014
Excellent TV for the money This is a slim TV with a great picture and is fully featured. A very cheap TV in fact as I got a sound bar and ps4 for free with it. The only down side is that the usb playback is a bit random for exfat/ntfs and mkv, so if you are looking for a TV to do that seamless, look elsewhere. I also don't use the 3D features (briefly tested it and seemed fine) so it might not be the best on this set. 05 August 2014
Fantastic TV Decided to stick with Sony when replacing our 7 year old 26in Bravia. I can't imagine a better picture for a TV of this type, size and price. Am watching Toy Story 3 in HD on Netflix with my daughter at the moment and it's absolutely superb. I chose the W8 over the W7 as the salesman advised the non-3D motion handling ability would be better. I will never know whether this is actually the case in practice, but worth taking the chance for an extra £60. This set apparently has a 400hz refresh rate (the w7 200hz). Again, I don't know whether this has any real-world impact - all I can say is that Toy Story 3 is looking superb. My Dad has a 600hz Samsung TV; we watched an HD movie on this which had an almost video- rather than film-like quality to it, possibly as a result of superior motion-handling. This may not be to all tastes in fact. Some reviewers mention disappointing sound quality (in common with most TVs of this type). The sound is fine in our 17x12 lounge, with sufficient bass, clarity and punch). Smart functionality is fine, a little slow. Sony doesn't (for now) give you certain catch ups e.g. ITV Player. The solution? Buy a Samsung Blu-Ray player (we chose the excellent BD6500). The screen is quite glossy and reflective, though I think this is common to this type of TV. We positioned it carefully to avoid reflections from lighting. The metal stand seems a point of contention with reviewers. I like it (the set has a high quality feel generally). You might want to bundle the leads together as they will be visible between the bottom of the panel and the stand. The external power supply might be a consideration if you want to wall-mount. 02 August 2014
Not for Wall Hanging This TV is not equipped properly to hang on the wall. Little thought has gone into the design of the television and leads are far too short. We had to make lots of adjustments to get this on the wall. A 2 hour job turned into a 8 hour job ! After paying for the eletrician wish I could have got Toshiba or Samsung. Second bad experience with Sony product never again. The TV comes with a bulky transformer. The TV sticks out about 20cm from the wall given the design, far too much. The free sound bar offer is ok, but again the sound bar is of extermely poor quality and I suspect if moved will break (like Ikea furniture). The picture and sound quality appear to be ok so no complaints there. 02 August 2014
Excellent After a lot of consideration on similar tv's decided on this one as the clarity of picture is superb and I am no disappointed. The sound quality is good also for such a slimline television.Ruby 01 August 2014
