Product information

Give every scene the detail it deserves with Sony’s HX50 digital compact camera. Currently the worlds smallest with a 30x optical zoom, it’s less than 4cm thick and boasts a powerful 20.4 megapixel sensor for high quality enlargements. Along with built-in image stabilisation, every shot will be professionally crisp and clear.

This camera comes with an 8GB memory card to get you shooting right out of the box.

Key benefits:

  • Normally seen in professional bridge cameras - the Exmor R CMOS 20.4 megapixel sensor gives you superb performance, even in low light. Along with the BIONZ processor razor sharp shots are only a button press away.
  • A 30x optical zoom gets you closer to the action that ever. Ideal for wildlife and sports shooting - the 24 - 720mm wide angle lens really comes into its own with super-detailed macro shots.
  • Thanks to the unique multi interface shoe you can add extras like a flash, EVF or microphone for shooting with a professional feel (attachments available separately).
  • You can capture crisp 1080p movies with the touch of a button in the popular AVCHD and MP4 formats. Perfect for editing and sharing.
  • Optical Steady Shot cuts down on shaky camera movement when shooting video, even while walking or zooming. It also cuts down on blur when shooting stills.
  • With built-in Wi-Fi backing up your shots and clips or even sharing them with family is easy. You can also use your phone as a remote shutter release via Wi-Fi. Perfect for when you need to get in shot or cut down on hand tremor.
  • Advanced face detection makes your subject the star of the show, while smile shutter makes sure that you capture that winning smile first time, every time.
  • Like artistic photo apps on your phone? You can get similar effects with the HX50 including toy camera, pop colour, partial colour, illustration and more.
  • A large and bright 3-inch LCD screen makes navigating your photos, reviewing shots and choosing settings a snap.

Great zoom in compct package The zoom on this camera is excellent especially when you consider the size of the body. Found it really easy to navigate around the instructions and settings. 21 March 2014
Excellent value for money Having researched the market place and read several reviews, I decided to search for the best price and the John Lewis package of camera and SD card was the best at the time, PLUS, I can get it delivered to my local Waitrose store. Having used the camera on my recent holiday, I found it very intuitive to use, both for still pictures and movies. Will be trying the other features of this very compact and feature filled camera. It feels solid in your hands and the controls are easy to use. I would recommend this camera to anyone considering down-sizing from D-SLR to something that fits in your pocket and has 20.4 CMOS chip combined with 30-times zoom. 06 March 2014
Beautiful photos - much better than our last travel compact We bought this to replace a similarly specified camera from a different manufacturer that developed a fault within a year of ownership (the most popular one in this high-zoom travel compact market), and we'd never been very pleased with. What a difference the Sony DSC HX50 makes! It is slightly larger, but in every way superior. Build quality is fantastic, especially as we opted to get the LCJ-HN retro case with it. The photos it takes are beautiful. Really natural colours compared to the last camera we had. Sharp details. Good in low light. Fast to take photos (the 10 shot is really good, and power on to photo is better than our last camera). We're also really pleased with the video quality. The focus works well even when zooming, and the quality is excellent. I'm even impressed with the wifi capabilities. The reviews we read online before purchase were very negative on this aspect, but I have an Android phone and the wifi connection is great. You can do a remote viewfinder / shutter release, which is a useful gimmick. More importantly, you can transfer full size images to your phone quite quickly (less than 30secs from picking up the phone to getting the image) so you can share proper camera photos on the move. A well engineered camera, with massive flexibility, that takes lovely photos. Well done Sony! 01 March 2014
Top quality bridge camera Trading up from a compact to get better pictures of scenery and action shots from hockey. Considered the RX50, but was won over by the 30Xzoom offered. Was a little unsure what the quality of the zoom would be like, but with the anti shake feature, it works like a dream. The video took a bit of getting used to, as the button is not from the control dial, but a separate one- many videos of the floor ensued. While not cheap, it seems to me to perform as well as the high price SLRs, and is a lot more tactile 03 December 2013
Fantastic Quality & Functions Early Xmas gift for Daughter and Husband who were visiting Iceland to mark a special occasion but didn't have a suitable camera. Just seen the results, amazing panoramic and winter wonderland landscape pictures, video footage of geysers, icebergs floating out to sea and Icelantic ponies. Sharp clear detailed photographs, you could actually see individual hairs on the ponies. Son in Law could not praise this gift enough. Thank you Sony. So impressed considering buying another for ourselves! 25 November 2013
Nice Optical Zoom DSC-HX9V user for the last few years. That camera has only one Achilles Heel, its LCD screen in full sun; otherwise it is a brilliant camera. I decided to upgrade to the HX50 for the zoom. First images are just as good as my legendary HX9V, no issues with the quality of the photos even on 30x zoom. Why only 4 stars, well the LCD is not viewable in high sunlight, just like my HX9V! Progress as far as optical zoom, but non viewability in bright sunlight is a major failure! Brilliant images if you can see what you are taking! 13 November 2013
Excellent Point and Shoot I'd been looking for a point and shoot to replace my older Cyber Shot camera for a little while, and I decided to purchase this camera based on its shining reviews in magazines and on websites. I've had it a few days and I am not disappointed. You will not be either. The 30X optical zoom is simply unbelievable, as is the clarity you get from the 20MP sensor. The camera - just - comfortably fits into my pocket so I can carry it around all day and have it ready for the perfect shot. The menus are very easy to navigate, although be sure to disable the annoying sound that bleeps whenever you press a button! I was very tempted to stretch my budget and purchase the vastly expensive Sony RX100 compact, but in my opinion the HX50 trumps the RX100 for its overall value for money, even though the image quality may not be quite as good. There are loads of preset scene modes to choose from such as night mode and portrait, and you even get the option to manually set aperture and shutter speed if that sort of thing interests you. If you're lazy like me though you'll no doubt appreciate the 'intelligent auto' mode which automatically recognises the shooting conditions and somehow manages to capture the perfect picture 99% of the time. Low light performance is very important to me, and this camera does not disappoint. Noise is kept to a minimum, delivering rich black tones whilst retaining the glow of background lights and the autofocus somehow locks on every time. Magic. In my opinion this is currently the best value for money point and shoot camera available not just from Sony, but other manufacturers too. The HX50 is more expensive than other compacts on the market, but as with most things in life you get what you pay for. The included 8GB memory card will set you up nicely too, with enough room for over 1,000 photos at maximum resolution. A fantastic camera. 03 July 2013
