Product information

More than just a compact, the Sony RX100 changes what you thought was possible with a point-and-shoot camera. Sleek, modern looks hide an advanced, extra large sensor that gives you unparalleled image capture with richer colours and incredible depth. You can also remember those special moments in exceptional detail thanks to Full HD video recording at the touch of a button.

  • Four times larger than standard sensor - the 1.0-type Exmore CMOS packs the details in. 20.2 effective megapixels give more vibrant shots along with exceptionally low noise level - even in low light situations.
  • The bright F1.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens has a wide aperture that lets in more light. It's also the key to limitless creative effects, with your subject in sharp focus against a smoothly-blurred background.
  • A 3.6x optical zoom gives you more intimate portraits and detailed shots. Clear Image Zoom pushes this to 7.2 with even more detail and no sacrifice of pixel count
  • You can capture crisp 1080p movies with the touch of a button in the popular AVCHD format. The HDMI-out slot on the camera even makes it easy to share everything on your HD TV.
  • SteadyShot Active Mode cuts down on shaky camera movement when shooting video, even while walking or zooming. It even reduces blur when shooting stills.
  • Enjoy the freedom to fine-tune your image with full control over automatic and manual exposure modes. Surrounding the lens, a smooth control ring allows effortless fingertip adjustment of exposure, zoom, picture effect and other functions.
  • Take control of your photos and videos and bring them to life through your PlayStation 3 with PlayMemories Studio. You can add sound effects, or edit your videos to make the perfect home movie quickly and easily.
  • In-camera retouching lets you add a professional sheen to any photo with red eye removal, unsharp mask and more - all without a computer.
  • A large and bright 3-inch LCD screen makes navigating your photos, reviewing shots and choosing settings a snap.
  • The lightweight aluminium casing not only cuts down on carry weight; it looks good too!

Q & As

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Brilliant little camera Firstly the buying experience of using click and collect worked without problem. I read a number of reviews for the RX100 all of which were positive, and I highly recommend the numerous YouTube videos. I own a Canon DSLR but my perception is that you carry a DSLR because you want to take pictures, but the RX100 is so small and 'pocketable' that you can have it with you whenever you are out and about and is immediately available for use. I have also bought the electronic version of the Alexander Smith Guide which is far superior to Sony's own offering. I have only had the camera a week but have already taken upwards of 200 pics and am very impressed with the results. You can be anything from the ultimate technical enthusiast and control aperture, shutter speed, manual focus etc etc but otherwise (like me so far) just set it to automatic and it will do the business. 05 March 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Cashback nightmare! Very pleased with the service from John Lewis at point of purchasing and generally since experiencing problems with Cashback. Whilst I am happy with the camera, I would not buy it or recommend anyone else to on the grounds of cashback. Having had several attempts to register on their website with an invalid serial number fault I have 5 fruitless calls and an email to Sony who are claiming that the serial number is not part of the promotion. Strange that, being that it is the same model. On two occasions I have been promised a call from the manager but this has not happened. John lewis are aware of this and have been in evil at contact but have suggested that it is an issue with Sony, which I understand. I would not have purchased this camera had I know I would have such problems. I am not quite sure whether Sony would be breaching cods of practice by suggesting this, especially since there is no literature to suggest some serial numbers would be excluded, regardless of the model being included. I will pursue this but look at other makes as I am sure there customer service would be much more accurate and genuine. 12 January 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Sony cashback is useless The camera is good as expected and met all my demands. I could have bought the item elsewhere for less money but I went for the cash back offer from Sony via John Lewis. After jumping through hoops I am still waiting! My advice is to purchase elsewhere and forget the cash back offer. 30 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 Great camera with a very high quality resolution. Simple to use. Need to purchase a guide book to fully appreciate the camera's full range of features (or is that because I am old lol). It does need the leather finger grip attachment to improve the handling of the camera. Overall very pleased with it and have no problem with recommending it esp to any amateur photographer infact any photographer. 02 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent camera This camera was bought to replace a different brand which died. I have loved using this camera, the pictures are sharp and detailed and the file sizes not too big. The camera is not too heavy to carry all the time. Does what it says it dose and does it well. 28 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding camera - every feature which actually matters and a proper sensor to boot I am a keen photographer usually using a decent SLR and wanted a good compact which wouldn't frustrate considering the versatility I usually have. This one is just the job - the key feature (not well advertised by Sony) is the size of the sensor in this camera is significantly larger than in most compacts which means a) It actually has room for all those pixels while retaining good quality b) The dynamic range (degrees of sensitivity between dark and light areas and range of light -levels actually captured) is great c) this camera can genuinely push to high ISO values without losing definition or creating silly amounts of noise/speckling. The lens is nice and fast too (1.8 down at the wide end of the lens). The camera can also be customised to allow quick access to the settings YOU find yourself wanting quick access to, and they've done a really good job in having those adjusted via a ring around the lens. Can't really fault this camera...other than it's not easy to grip. I'm going to get hold of an optional stick on grip Sony produce which goes on that smooth metal area on front right hand side. Incidentally, if anyone else is confused by apparent lack of close focussing in macro mode, this camera (slightly unusually) wants to be at the wide end of the zoom to achieve it's biggest "object size on sensor" possible. 17 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great image quality 'You can buy this one, the Mark 1, for under £400 or the Mark 2 for £700. They both take more or less identical photos in terms of image quality. The extra £300 gets you a flip screen, wifi etc. but the basic photography is the same. Most reviews say this camera is the best in its price range and is the only one with a 1" sensor - meaning it should be capable of giving you the best quality images. The Zeiss-branded lens is also very good. I'm certainly impressed with the image quality (I'm very fussy on sharpness and colour!) and also the facilities. I got some amazing night photos using "SuperIntelligent Auto" where it takes several shots and stitches the sharpest bits together (or something like that!). They could have been taken on a tripod, they were that good. In daylight the photos are also excellent quality - way better than most compacts. The menu system on this camera is very similar to my Sony A700 DSLR and therefore I find it quite intuitive. The ergonomics are nothing much to write home about although the compact size probably means it's impossible to come closer to DSLR ergonomics. I just find it a bit fiddly! One of the add-on rubber grips would also make the camera nicer to hold. My wife has a Panasonic LX5 (current model=LX7) and it takes great photos too. The LX7 is a bit cheaper than this Sony and has a f1.4 lens versus the f1.8 on the Sony. However, I have always felt that the LX5 photos look over-sharpened and saturated as they come off the camera whereas the Sony images come off looking natural, but sharp and accurately saturated. Bottom line - I'm delighted with the image quality from this camera. It comes very close to my Sony A700 DSLR with good quality glass. At under £400 for the mark 1 it's a bargain and I'd definitely recommend it strongly! 16 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Creative Compact Camera Over our busy Christmas period this compact camera has been one of the most popular, with its excellent image quality, screen resolution and its easy of use; great automatic settings for beginners and manual settings for the enthusiast. Sometimes high end cameras have so many buttons and functions it can be confusing for my customers who are looking to upgrade, the on screen information on the RX100 makes the transition easier. 23 January 2013
