Product information

More than just a compact, the Sony RX100 II changes what you thought was possible with a point-and-shoot camera. Sleek, modern looks hide an advanced, extra large sensor that gives you unparalleled image capture with richer colours and incredible depth. You can also remember those special moments in exceptional detail thanks to Full HD video recording at the touch of a button.

This updated model features a superior ISO rating and is compatible with a range of powerful hotshoe attachments that will take your photography to the next level.

Key benefits:

  • Four times larger than standard sensor - the 1.0-type Exmor CMOS packs the details in. 20.2 effective megapixels give more vibrant shots along with exceptionally low noise level - even in low light situations.
  • The bright F1.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens has a wide aperture that lets in more light. It's also the key to limitless creative effects, with your subject in sharp focus against a smoothly-blurred background.
  • A 3.6x optical zoom gives you more intimate portraits and detailed shots. Clear Image Zoom pushes this to 7.2 with even more detail and no sacrifice of pixel count
  • With a 3-inch flip-out screen the RX100 II gives you the flexibility to shoot however you want. Hold it over your head for crowd shots, or use the digital viewfinder (available separately) to frame the perfect portrait.
  • You can capture crisp 1080p movies with the touch of a button in the popular AVCHD format. The HDMI-out slot on the camera even makes it easy to share everything on your HD TV.
  • The RX100 II features a multi interface shoe that lets you upgrade your camera with attachments like an external flash, stereo microphone and digital viewfinder.
  • This camera also lets you shoot in RAW format for more control in the editing suite.
  • SteadyShot Active Mode cuts down on shaky camera movement when shooting video, even while walking or zooming. It even reduces blur when shooting stills.
  • Enjoy the freedom to fine-tune your image with full control over automatic and manual exposure modes. Surrounding the lens, a smooth control ring allows effortless fingertip adjustment of exposure, zoom, picture effect and other functions.
  • Take control of your photos and videos and bring them to life through your PlayStation 3 with PlayMemories Studio. You can add sound effects, or edit your videos to make the perfect home movie quickly and easily.
  • In-camera retouching lets you add a professional sheen to any photo with red eye removal, unsharp mask and more - all without a computer.
  • Includes battery pack, AC adapter, micro USB cable, wrist strap and strap adapter.

Q & As

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 97 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by A DSLR may do more but this is the one you'll use! I've only had this a couple of weeks and have not yet explored all its features. The jpg results so far are excellent in terms of exposure, colour, sharpness, tonal range. The camera works well in low light because of its f/1.8 lens and excellent sensor so the flash won't be needed that often. The camera is compact enough to be carried in a case attached to a waist belt. It appears to be solid - mainly metal not plastic. The drawbacks are ; f/1.8 is only available at wide angle, there's no viewfinder, the zoom is only 3.6x and it's not cheap compared with other camera types. 13 May 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Let down by significant shortcomings Like most modern digital cameras it tends to be more clever than most users need. Some features are great, like the moveable display. Potentially the smart hot-shoe its also a super feature. On the other hand, if you wish to focus at shorter distances (such as 30cm) with the lens set to a mid-range focal length, this camera simply can't do it. Close focusing is only possible at the wide angle setting of the lens where geometric distortions are unavoidable. Back to my trusty Z950 for much of what I do. 10 May 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very Good Image Quality For a Compact Camera Pros: - Great JPG's out of the camera. - RAW quality is even better. - Image noise is fine right up to 3200. - Pocket friendly 1" sensor compact camera, smaller than the competition. - Great build quality. - Love the Multi-Interface Hot Shoe, this sealed the deal for me. Sadly missing from all the other RX100's. - Lovely Vario Sonnar T* 3.6x lens. - Customisable lens ring is silky smooth with just the right damping. Cons: - No touch screen on any of the RX100's. - Shutter button difficult to locate with index finger if not actually looking. - Very slippery body shape, making the optional rubbery grip essential. This should be included. - Menu system not the most user friendly out there. - No option to decouple exposure and focus when half pressing the shutter button, like on the NEX-6. This is exaserbated by the lack of a dedicated button for AE Lock. The only option you have is to assign the center button, of the four way control, to AE Lock and this is extreemly inconvenient when you have Flexible Spot focus set, as this function can also only be assigned to the same center button. So you simply can't have AE Lock and Flexible Spot focus availible at the same time and this is exactly when you need to have them both. For me this is the worst issue for the RX100 series of cameras. - Sony's in-camera image database filesystem is prone to problems and becomming corrupt. I have witnessed this on several Sony camera models now. - The small hardware buttons could all be larger, there's plenty of space. 24 April 2016

Rated 5 out of 5 by Best compact camera The quality of pictures we take are much better than expected from a compact size camera. Beautiful, professional looking pictures worth the sacrifice for a large zoom. 19 April 2016
Rated 2 out of 5 by Rx100 ii Well having owned in excess of 30 cameras I was really looking forward to owning the rx100, unfortunately I was left feeling very let down. Quality feel was good however there is an annoying flex at the thumb grip where the camera pushes in and out very slightly, general performance was very fast, no issues with start up or write times to the SD card. Image quality was dissapointing, perhaps I was expecting too much from the 1" sensor?, I found it lacked the sharpness and punch of my previous Fuji xe1 and had many occasions where it struggled to focus on the eyes during portrait shots, I just found the quality lacking and boring. Overall the size is good for sticking in your pocket but I ended up finding it too small, the articulated screen just felt stiff and a bit flimsy but the pixel quality is very good and nice and clear. All in I got fed up with it after two months and have sold it and bought a Fuji x100 which I am loving to bits, I personally find the larger sensors are the only way to go and the size sacrifice is just not an issue anymore over quality usabilitie and function, compared to the Fuji the rx100 is fiddly to use, awkward to hold and to many hidden menus, the Fuji is a joy to hold and use, and the image quality blows the rx100 out the water. 12 April 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Camera I bought the camera to replace an NEX-C3 because I wanted something more compact and pocket sized. It's certainly heavier than some compact cameras but it's sturdy. It is a little smooth to grip well but I bought the optional AG-R2 grip which is well worth it and does not noticeably add to the size of the camera. So far, I can't really think of anything negative to say. Pictures are excellent. Low light performance is also outstanding for a compact camera. Focus is fast and accurate. The menu system is clear and efficient. Video is full HD rather than the 720p of the NEX, so I can't really feel that I've compromised anything apart from interchangeable lenses. If I struggled to find any negative comment I would just say that I found some picture a bit neutral and I had to very slightly adjust the saturation to get the balance I liked, but in fairness the shots were taken on a very dull day and the camera probably got it spot on. It has NFC and Wi-Fi and I found the wi-fi a bit tricky to get working but then I don't care, I'll never use it, and I probably didn't persevere enough. 10 March 2016
