Great compact camera body with full DSLR functions I'd been looking for a camera for several years, and initially was looking at the physically smaller NEX5 (N, then R, then T) but never quite got around to buying one. I'd always liked the idea of the compact nature of the NEX5 but I'm glad that I eventually decided to go for the 6. Although they use the same sensor - the addition of the hot shoe and EVF really tips the balance in favour of the NEX 6. Ergonomically the camera body feels really good in the hand, it's not heavy by any means but does feel reassuringly solid. Buttons fall easily to hand, but the touchscreen of the 5 does lend itself to the icon driven menu perhaps a little better. Screen quality is good - would you expect anything different from Sony? In-camera apps do add functionality - but with wifi and a smart phone you can get this from free to download apps from Google play (I assume Apple too). Overall? great camera. Would have been nice to have the a6000 but the cost at the time was just a little too much so I'm very happy with my NEX 6. 15 April 2014
Massive Design Flaw Great camera and lenses, (see other review) BUT there is a massive design flaw. When in HDR or Auto bracketing modes, you cannot use the self timer or an electronic shutter release, EXACTLY THE TIME YOU NEED THEM TO AVOID VIBRATION!!! It's only when you start to use the camera that you discover this glaring design flaw, then it's too late! With most other cameras you would be able set the bracketing, put the camera on a tripod and release the shutter via the self timer or electronic release, thereby negating any vibration. I've been in touch with Sony and they have no plans to provide a firmware update, Shocking! The designer of this camera was obviously not a photographer. If you decide to purchase this product be aware of the problem. 12 February 2014
My move from a DSLR to a Mirrorless compact camera! First thing to say about the Sony NEX-6 is that it's a great all round camera. The image quality is excellent, the body and lens are compact and stylish and the video is crisp and clear. The features on the camera rival that of many DSLR cameras and far surpass those of a compact point and shoot. The things I particularly like about the camera are it's size, battery life, excellent tilting LED screen and even more amazing OLED viewfinder, WiFi connectivity and of course the best part about the camera is the image quality. Getting back to the viewfinder for just a moment though... This is something that many people overlook when selecting a new camera. Today the viewfinder has been replaced by large screens on the back of the camera for composing a shot. Although this is a great advancement for composition and of course our need to instantly review our shots it should not replace the viewfinder. The reason for this is that in bright sunlight the large screens on the back of nearly all modern cameras are unviewable which then makes it difficult to compose your shot. The built in viewfinder of the NEX-6 means this is not a problem. You even get a little rubberised viewfinder hood in the box which shields the viewfinder from sunlight and gives greater comfort when shooting. I've owned this camera for about a month now and had it over the Christmas holidays (taking photos of the royals on Christmas day at Sandringham) and for a trip to Barcelona. My trip to Barcelona was for 4 days and the battery lasted the whole trip which I was very impressed with. The camera also has WiFi built in which is great when you’re travelling. This meant that I could connect the camera wirelessly to my iPad and the pictures just flood into a folder in the Apple photos app...brilliant! I would definitely recommend this camera to a friend and buying it from John Lewis as the price is very competitive and you get an extra years warranty. 16 January 2014
