Measure and Fit at Home:
Start-rite believe it's really important to measure a child's feet accurately before buying them every pair of shoes, as ill-fitting shoes can have a serious impact on your child's foot health. To be sure that your child is wearing shoes that fit properly, you can either visit one of the John Lewis stores, where trained staff will measure and fit your child with shoes, or if that's not convenient, use one of our specially developed fitting gauges to help you measure your child's feet at home.

Click here to find out how to measure using the gauges and to watch step by step videos of how to fit your child’s shoes.

Brand Story

Start-rite's history dates back to 18th century Norwich, where a leather worker called James Smith began offering the first ready-made, off the peg footwear. Following the First World War, the company began to produce footwear specially designed for children, which gave their unique feet room to grow. The name "Start-rite" was first used in the 1920s and the iconic twins logo was introduced a decade later. Start-rite began to focus primarily on children's shoes in 1952 and after extensive research they noted the need for shoes to be fitted by trained people, developed multiple width fittings and introduced their "heel stiffener" to help balance and growth. They received the Royal Warrant in 1955 after supplying the Windsor children with shoes. In recent years they have evolved to use two hundred years expertise to meet the needs and desires of today's children.

Q & As

Rated 2.6 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Gorgeous school shoes Really well made and beautifully fitted shoes. I will definitely but start rite again in the future. 09 December 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great smart shoes My daughter picked these brogues for school, they are well made and look great. 26 August 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Smart brogues These shoes look lovely, fit well. BUT the front, especially the tongue comes up too high and it is also very stiff which meant that it sticks into the front of your ankle area. This is even more uncomfortable as you walk and your foot bends forward. My daughter really wanted these for school but we had to take them straight back. 12 February 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Pointy toes These are lovely looking shoes and fitted my 6 year old pretty well. However, after wearing them briefly around the home she decided that her toes were getting squashed, so we returned them. They are much more pointy than any other shoes we have tried on from Start-rite for this age group, and I can't help wonder why they are making shoes that squash a young child's feet - plenty of time to do that themselves when they are adults! 31 January 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Disappointing Purchased for the start of the new school year (sept) by mid oct where my daughters foot bends the patent has started to split, I will be returning to store to exchange 17 October 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lasted a whole school year! I paid the extra to go for a trusted brand and the shoes have lasted from September to July. I have had none of the problems posted by others and the shoes, although looking tired, have not split or cracked and will definately see her out. 03 July 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Poor quality Start-rite shoes My 11-year-old was initally thrilled with these practical, stylish shoes. However, they are surprisingly poor quality for a top brand. After a short time, the sole inside began to wrinkle and split, making them awkward to put on and uncomfortable to wear. We paid full price as my daughter has narrow feet and it is hard to find the exact fit. But we are very disappointed and will not be buying Start-rite again. 01 July 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by not good! i brought these in September for my daughter, by October the sole had started to come away at the front of both shoes. she usually only needs new shoes when her feet have grown so i know it is the poor quality of the shoe at fault. 10 January 2013
