Measure and Fit at Home:
Start-rite believe it's really important to measure a child's feet accurately before buying them every pair of shoes, as ill-fitting shoes can have a serious impact on your child's foot health. To be sure that your child is wearing shoes that fit properly, you can either visit one of the John Lewis stores, where trained staff will measure and fit your child with shoes, or if that's not convenient, use one of our specially developed fitting gauges to help you measure your child's feet at home.

Click here to find out how to measure using the gauges and to watch step by step videos of how to fit your child’s shoes.

Brand Story

Start-rite's history dates back to 18th century Norwich, where a leather worker called James Smith began offering the first ready-made, off the peg footwear. Following the First World War, the company began to produce footwear specially designed for children, which gave their unique feet room to grow. The name "Start-rite" was first used in the 1920s and the iconic twins logo was introduced a decade later. Start-rite began to focus primarily on children's shoes in 1952 and after extensive research they noted the need for shoes to be fitted by trained people, developed multiple width fittings and introduced their "heel stiffener" to help balance and growth. They received the Royal Warrant in 1955 after supplying the Windsor children with shoes. In recent years they have evolved to use two hundred years expertise to meet the needs and desires of today's children.

Q & As

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 4 reviewers.
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not worth the money The old adage used to be that if you buy cheap, you buy twice. Well, Startrite shoes aren't cheap and I'm still going to end up having to buy twice. I initially bought these to replace a pair of Startrite Stone shoes, where the sole unglued from the leather. These haven't faired much better. The leather version need polishing everyday or they look scruffy. The sole is rubbish. There must have been an air bubble in the rubber when they were set as a random hole has appeared in the sole under the ball of the foot (not a wear hole, just a random hole in the rubber). Where the leather creases with the shape of the foot, bits of leather have literally fallen away. And this is after just a term. I'd always bought Startrite shoes in the past but something has changed in their manufacturing process as the quality has sadly deteriorated. 07 February 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent school shoes Super fit (even for a wide foot), with good coverage of the foot for the winter months. Sole appears quite sturdy and seems to be holding up, two weeks into term. 16 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Solid, hard-wearing shoes Purchased same shoes for the third year running in black leather. Excellent shoe. It does get scuffed on the end after a while, but then she does like to rake her toes along the floor for some reason! Despite the wear and tear, they are very well made and offer very good support. 16 September 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Soft soles let them down We have had three pairs of these now, as they're the best fit for my daughter's narrow e fitting feet and supportive as she is prone to roll in on her feet. The patent lasts fairly well and doesn't need polished but the soles wear down to the patent every time. It is a pity, as they would be great shoes if they could make the soles from a stronger rubber. She finds them comfortable though and keeps wanting to buy the same pair again. 10 March 2014
