Q & As

Steiner Safari Ultrasharp Binoculars, 8 x 22 4 5 1 1
Opto-mechanics to German quality and performance standards These binos are superbly built, and perform as well as can be expected from such a small unit -they're quite small enough to put in a trousers pocket. The 'rubber' finish to the grip is very good. There is very little chromatism, and then only close to the field edge, and overall image quality is very high, though not at Leica levels. Made in China to German DIN standards? But note that the eye-relief is insufficient for spectacle users, which I am, and there is the usual problem of adjusting the focus in two optical paths, while aligning the user's eye pupil with the binos' exit pupil in bright light. These are the inevitable consequences of the high magnification combined with a small objective lens diameter. To set them up, it is necessary to blank off the left objective to adjust focus, while holding the unit to the face, and then blanking the right objective to adjust the left eyepiece, and adjusting the 'interpupillary distance' to achieve a circular field, without vignetting. It is a very clumsy process, but no worse than for any other set. They don't tell you that in the 'handbook' which is just pointless advertising. And then it's all spoiled when you fold them to put them in the pouch. So don't do that - just leave them as is! Used them recently on hols, landscaping, but really for garden bird-spotting. So overall, a nice set, and good value. 27 September 2012
