Product information

With Sony’s HX400, you’ll enjoy the simplicity of a fixed lens and the control of DSLR handling. A powerful optical zoom extends up to 50x for detailed telephoto and macro shooting, while onboard image stabilisation helps keep everything crisp. Autofocus also makes light work of action shot, keeping your subject at the centre of attention, and ensuring sharper stills. When a single picture isn’t enough, there’s Full HD 1080p video capture with all the benefits of active stabilisation to compensate for camera roll and hand movement.

50x zoom
Forget changing lenses while you’re in the wild or on the beach: every photo opportunity’s covered with the powerful 50x optical zoom lens. Grab expansive, wide-angle landscapes – or zoom in for telephoto close-ups of animals and birds, while your camera keeps it all steady.

20.4 megapixels
More detail means better pictures and Full HD video. Capture moments that really stand out from the crowd with a 20.4-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor that cuts out picture noise for clear, sharp results, even when the lights are low.

Auto settings
Wondering which settings are best? Let your camera do all the work. From close-ups to twilight portraits, your camera adjusts everything automatically so you easily get the results you want, no fuss. It even detects if your subject's moving, cutting motion blur in any scene.

Wi-Fi & NFC
There’s only one thing better than taking a great photo, and that’s sharing it. With Wi-Fi and NFC built-in you can share your best shots in a second. And with the smartphone remote app you’ll always be in control.

The HX400’s GPS let syou tag you pictures as you take them so you can relive your adventures step by step back home.

Electronic viewfinder
A 201-dot resolution electronic viewfinder gives you a clear, real-time preview with 100% frame coverage – ideal for framing, focusing, and reviewing shots. A built-in eye-sensor automatically switches you between the LCD display and the viewfinder.

Q & As

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Superb and easy to use camera Bought at the weekend and very impressed with this camera which I bought to improve the quality and flexibility of my photos without the additional cost and bulk of an SLR with comparable range. The zoom (a major feature of the camera) is superb and the image quality is excellent. This is obviously not an SLR but in comparison to my 5 yr old compact camera and iPhone 6 the images are simply stunning. 11 May 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fine camera Bought as a gift - my brother in law loves it - cheers 21 April 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great camera overall but Sony are a nightmare with promotions/software updates Overall been really pleased with the Camera although they still haven't updated software to latest Mac OS X and cashback has still not been paid after 4 months. I would not but another Sony product based on a promotion, the product itself has given me some really nice photographs and the zoom will bring the Moon to full frame and pleasing results even hand held! Still learning about its features and hoping it will continue to deliver great results. 17 December 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Replacement for Sony HX200V As a replacement for the HX200V this camera has a few improvements. The lens has a 55 mm front screw mount allowing fitting of a UV filter and lens hood (Minolta) though this prevents the attachment of the lens cap The lens cap on the HX200 had a cord attachment to prevent loss, but the one with the HX400 has no cord attachment, so could easily get lost anyway, a retrograde step. The 50x zoom lens is a delight to use and first results are impressive. An additional feature is HDR images (high dynamic range) and when selected takes 3 bracketed shots and processes the shots in camera to give one JPG image. The button positioning is improved by moving the 'play' button from the upper rear face which leaves the Video button by itself, much easier than trying to find the correct button when using the eye viewer. Another new feature is the function button which allows easier access for changing up to 12 functions associated with the selected shooting mode. I am impressed by the advances in technology that Sony continue to make and the quality they provide in their products. Though JL advertise this camera as the HX400, it is in fact the HX400V which is the model that has GPS included, a feature shown as included on the camera in the specification given on the JL website and the camera I received is identified as the HX400V on the box and the camera base This caused problems when claiming the £40 redemption from Sony, when the claim form would not accept HX400V as the model, which it is, but did accept HX400 which it is not !!!! The redemption has since been received from Sony ok. One note of caution is for the LED display which on the HX200V has started to lose some of its anti glare coating and I am advised is through occasionally using LED screen clean to remove smudges. I will be more careful and only use a microfibre cloth on the HX400V The tiltable LED screen is a lovely piece of innovation allowing high and low shots with the camera easily. 16 December 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Intelligent camera for photographers who want really good results. Everything about this Sony bridge camera is great! Intelligent and super intelligent auto modes. A superb stabilised ZESS lens which ranges from wide angle to 50 times optical ( can extend to 100x digital zoom). The 20.4 MP sensor gives great editing flexibility. Has auto switch-on view finder when you need it on a sunny day. Has lots of sophisticated features built in to make sure of a great images every time and a easy software menu for those special effects. Has up-to-date connections to pc's & smart phones.. It is lighter in weight compared to most DSLR's. & has brillant 1080p video. Strongly recommend you check it out. . 18 November 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by from a novice Even though I know very little about photography and this is my first bridge camera, i'm surprised by how easy it is to use for a beginner. I haven't had the need to use the manual mode yet as there are so many different settings on, with hints and tips on how to use them. I got a great picture of the moon, complete with craters, I was very impressed. There is also wi-fi on it, and if you have a smart tv it's very easy to view your photos there, with no need for a cable unless you want to watch a video you have recorded. I have only deducted one star for something minor, and that is the lens cap. I would have preferred if it was still connected to the camera when you take it off. I keep worrying incase I lose it. I still have a lot to learn but have taken some great photos already so looking forward to learning more about it. 19 August 2014
