Good point but....
I had this kettle for two years. The lid was difficult to close for much of that time. When the lid opening button failed altogether I returned it under the 3 year guarantee and ordered a different make. The good point was that the kettle remained cool to touch even when boiling - a good safety feature let down by the lid closing problem.

on/off switch didn't work
I bought this on Sunday and it was back in the box by Monday. The on/off switch didn't work. Not good for an expensive product. JL refunded with no problems.

Good Looking Product
Purchased this kettle about six weeks ago and,despite known negative reviews,I have had no problems with it.

A real shame as this is a good looking product but, after all the boiling and changing of water, this kettle imparts a horrible taste to the water. I wish we had read these reviews first as they are totally true. I am not sure what part is tainting the water but I suspect it is the plastic tube by the handle, that shows you the water level. Either that or the stainless steel is coated with something.
This is going back to John Lewis.
JL stop stocking this item as it does your reputation no good at all.

Looks good but quality poor
This kettle looks good and boils quickly. But otherwise this was a most disappointing buy. As others have noted the filter was very difficult to fit. More importantly the lid catch very soon stopped working and the rubber seal round the lid came loose, meaning that the lid would not stay closed. An expensive purchase: you are better spending the money on another brand

Do not buy this kettle
After 4 months of metallic tasting water we have given up on this kettle and are returning it. One of its features is that it is insulated to keep water hot but we must use the water as soon as it boils or the taste becomes unbearable. Any remaining water must be discarded.
I made 2 mistakes: not reading these reviews before making my purchase and thinking that a 3 year guarantee might mean that this is a good product.
JL should also give up on this product.

Fool me once ......
I had three of these kettles up to January 2013, all failed within a few months, two with mechanical problems with the lid and the final one lit up nicely but declined to boil.
Encouraged by Gabriella's comments from the JL team I thought I would try the 11690. I know that one definition of madness is that you keep doing the same thing expecting a different outcome.
Just five weeks before the filter fell off the 11690 and lay like a dead goldfish in the kettle.
This kettle has been sold under three different model numbers in the last year with no significant changes in design. A cynic might suggest that if you change the model number then anyone looking for online reviews will not be directed to the full history of shocking quality control issues on what looks like a premium product.
One star for design.

Great, until it wasn't
When it worked it was brilliant, but after about 8 months the lid stopped closing, and I see others have had a similar problem.
We have the same model at work and it's worked fine, but I'm disappointed that if this is such a common problem that they're not recalled.
