Q & As

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 44 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic box Set up super easy with this box, hooks up to the internet to easily access catch up TV. Bit slow when you turn it on, but I'm just rather impatient. Fantastic space for recordings, a couple great HD channels available and plenty channels to always pretty much have something to watch. Even channels which aren't HD are brought up to near enough quality. The showcase feature is great as can easily scroll through great recommendations to record programmes I might have otherwise missed. Also, I use the app so if there's something I'm going to miss when out and about can set it to record from wherever I am. Very happy with my purchase so far. 22 February 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wish we'd bought one sooner! This was bought to replace a monthly package. It was easy to set up and is easy to use. It provides all that we had in our previous package. The beauty of this is that after a total of 4 months it will have paid for itself and no more monthly bills. Recommended. 15 February 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Humax Freesat HDR 1000 This is the second box within 3 weeks. This device locks up a lot, have to turn off at the mains often. The remote is next to useless, often not controlling the box, it will flash but not actually function. On demand and showcase does not work, even with a software update. I am going to return this as it appears to be a waste of money. 15 February 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Dont touch with a bargepole - unreliable Our children bought this for us as a Christmas present with a 1TB hard-disk. Just over the 12 month's guarantee it died. It took 2 months to get it repaired (that was free) and, of course, we lost all our recordings - there is no way to back them up on another medium. Now, just under 9 months later its zap again - this time the machine freezes and all the recordings are unreadable. A one year guarantee is useless if its unreliable and we loose the recordings. Unreliable - dont buy 10 February 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good Product but........ I would have given this product 5 stars as it is a very good product and offers the facilities I need but for one very basic thing which I suppose I should have researched, and that was the fact that it does not offer The Drama Channel which I had with Freeview. I always had it on Freeview and as this offered more channels presumed it would be included, it was not. My only other gripe was the fact that it had to be connected to my router and broadband. I am not very "tekky" and presumed it would be wifi and it was not. It meant me having to purchase a set of powerline adaptors to connect the ethernet cables to my router. Now it is working perfectly and I am happy with what it does, recording wise. A daily programme guide would have been useful instead of having to scroll across the screen for every 2 hrs of the day. I may have reconsidered and purchased a Freeview recorder though if I had known about the channels problem. Otherwise it is a neat box, delivered earlier than promised and was fairly easy to set up. Just connect all the leads and the reader on the front of the box told you what to do. Picture quality is good and the remote is fairly easy to understand. I notice one or two people have complained that they lost some recordings but don't know about that yet as only had it for one day. Just wanted to ensure people got the couple of drawbacks I mentioned early on and I may be able to come back later to amend if any problems. 03 January 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Goodbye to Sky After years of on / off contemplation of leaving Sky, the latest above inflation price hike for a service that never gets any better was the final straw (the annual charge based on the monthly cost is frightening). I could not have been happier with the results. The Humax is a far more compact device than he outgoing Sky box. Admittedly it doesn't feel the most sturdy of items, but the reality is that it sits on a shelf and isn't being stress tested like an aircraft wing. It was simple to install (a few minutes of pressing "next" every so often whilst the unit does its thing), and it immediately hooked up. The TV guide is simple, well laid out and completely intuitive. It is far more user friendly than what we've been used to. The recorder is simple and works perfectly, and the live pause is great. We have this hooked up to a Bose system via a digital optical connection and it works perfectly. The picture is also a good deal better than the Sky box equivalent in both standard and high definition Like so many others I wish that we'd done this a long time ago. 27 December 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 Absolute rubbish Collected the item and set it up to replace an ailing older unit. First off it wouldn't get catch up TV, so updated the software using the built in link. Set it up again and set it to record some programmes -fine so far. Checked quickly the next day, recordings were there. A few days later went to watch the recordings - except they are not there! Tried to get them on catchup, that has gone too. Now the box is going back to John Lewis. 07 December 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Should have bought this years ago Like many other reviewers I was fed up with paying Sky every month so bought one of these. Should have done it years ago. Set up using existing Sky dish is easy, unplug the Sky box, plug in the Humax. Picture quality is better than with Sky. Downsides are that the Humax box is slow to boot up, around 30 to 40 seconds, the remote control is not as robust a quality as Sky and of course the menu layout and display is different and can take a day or two getting used to. Overall a good product that I would recommend and buy again. 04 November 2014
