Editors Notes

The company that was destined to become LEGO started life as being a small workshop that produced wooden toys, run by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932. The name ‘LEGO’ was adopted in 1934, coming from the Danish phrase ‘leg godt’, which means ‘play well’. It wasn’t until 1947 that they started producing plastic toys, with the first version of the now infamous interlocking bricks coming in 1949.

They weren’t quite the bricks that people are used to nowadays, being made from a different material and having a slightly different locking system. It was actually Christiansen’s son Godtfred Kirk that saw the potential for the bricks to become a tool for creative play and in 1958, the modern brick design was born. From this date, despite variation in the design and purpose of individual pieces over the years, each remains compatible in some way with previous pieces. So you could have a LEGO set from 1958 and it would still be completely compatible with a modern set.

Since the 1960, thousands of sets have been released covering everything from Aliens to the Wild West. The only area that the company has never tackled directly is military-themed sets, because Ole Kirk set a policy that they must never make war seem like child’s play. The largest ever LEGO set to date is a scale-model of the Taj Mahal, which was made out of 5922 pieces.

The LEGO Group's motto is ‘det bedste er ikke for godt’, which roughly translates to "only the best is the best". Ole Kirk Christiansen came up with this phrase to encourage workers to always produce the highest quality toys possible.

Nowadays, LEGO makes a vast range of toys for all ages, as well as teaching materials for children, which are distributed in over 130 countries. The company has approximately 10,000 employees and is the world's third largest manufacturer of play materials.

Q & As

LEGO 4 Stud Storage Brick 4.7 5 32 32
Looks great but lego gets stuck I bought a couple of these and they look great and the fact that they stack is brilliant but there seems to be a slight design flaw in that the smaller pieces of lego get stuck in the rim at the bottom. We have lost a few headlights and smaller accessories which are jammed in. So these may be great for duplo or just plain lego blocks but not ideal for the Lego City sets that we have. 21 November 2014
Flawed Why would LEGO design a storage box that traps little pieces in a deep groove? Badly thought out. Maybe the reason is that they can get away with it because the kids love them and won't let me return them! 17 September 2014
Perfect Lego toy storage solution Great variety of vivid colours to choose from and sturdily built. Already have the larger version of this in blue for my son. Bought this for my cousins little boy because I know how good they are. Would recommend this product. 07 January 2014
Exactly as described Not much to say realy this is just a really big lego brick that has the space to store a medium sized kit, hubby loved it 11 January 2013
Lego storage I really cannot say enough good about this, firstly it is Lego, and secondly John Lewis. Between the two they delivered everything (Duplo plates and 5 Storage Boxes) The boxes are great (I had been worried they would be too small) but contain Brio and Duplo with ease, got one of each colour, will get more !! 29 December 2012
Really useful product Really good item as shown at the picture. They can store a good amount of items and they are of very good quality and very nice colors. 28 October 2012
Excellent! Absolutely love these storage boxes... Think we have them in all colours now. I especially love the way they stack on top of each other so very space saving! Would recommend highly... Not the cheapest but quality is good and it's definitely unique! Everyone that see's them loves them! 24 October 2012
Perfect for little kids and big kids! My husband spotted this on the John Lewis website and insisted that he had to have it for nostalgia reasons. I can't say I shared his initial enthusiasm but it certainly does what it says on the tin - it is a giant red Lego brick. It is a good size and perfect for storing small/medium sized toys or gadgets. Good quality and hard wearing. 10 June 2012
