Great, but a shame it doesn’t work when you need it
WD appear to be having great issues with this device at present, as with me many people are finding that it continuously drops off the network and is not accessible remotely. New firmware was rolled out to fix such problems, but this has made things worse for me, and it now needs rebooting daily to re-establish that connection.
Part of me is wanting to hang on to see if this is fixed, but it has been two months now and numerous calls to WD support have not got me anywhere, they are unable to fix this mess they created and they are unable to roll back the firmware or advise when new firmware will be released.
If you do buy this I would strongly advise you do not upgrade the firmware to v04.00.00-607 and stick with what you have.

Good spec but very poor performance
I bought this drive so I could backup a couple of Macs and store our videos, photos and music in one place.
I expected the first backups to be slow but in one case it took almost two days and this was on a wired 100Mb home network. Subsequent backups (using time machine) have been faster but occasionally fail as Time Machine finds inconsistencies in the backup and decides it need to start from scratch.
Copying files to and from the device can also take an age - making it impractical to use as a media server or for centralised storage.
This is very disappointing as I have a couple of portable WD drives which are great. They need to do something about the internal NAS hardware and software and improve performance on this product to make it useful.

No longer working after 2 days
Bought the 3TB model 10 days ago, spent hours copying all my family photos and videos to it, now 2 days later it has stopped working. I've tried all the troubleshooting options & now waiting for WD support to advise next step. I've trawled through the WD support community and can't see a solution so I assume I am going to have to return to JL & start again. Maybe I've been unlucky since when it did work it was good for storing and accessing our home photos and videos. Here's my feedback:
-Copying to the drive over home network was quick using PC app - 40Gig in 2-3 hours.
-The Iphone photo app is good imo. It caches the photo thumbnails and images you have accessed so you can access them when offline.
-Streamed photos and even 1080p home movies to our PS3 & new LG 4k TV with no issues, but streaming to a 2 yr old Samsung D7000 TV was not as good even after I updated the firmware on the TV. This could be Samsung being sometimes poor at software imo.
-Interface/dashboard is nice and clear
-The build quality does not seem as good as I was expecting from reading the expert reviews online. Compared to other products it looks cheap plastic with shiny white plastic sides. Not as solid feeling as a WD Passport portable drive. Maybe this is not important to its reliability, but it kind of gives the impression if they used cheap looking materials on the outside, what did they use inside!
-Set up is a bit confusing when it comes to setting users and email addresses imo
-Can't fast forward some high res 1080p movies while streaming, which I can do when streaming the same movie files from our pc over our home network using Plex media or Samsung allshare. This suggests the included media server is basic. Maybe this will improve in software updates.

Now All our Media is accessible everywhere
I had completed a bit of research on NAS storage and although this product was cheaper than the WD cloud Mirror and the EX2 and EX4 it seemed to get the tech vote. I was a little worried about the reviews on here about this device as I wanted to centralise all of our personal and small business files on this device. I have had the device a few hours now and have set it up easily on my iMac, two pc's running windows 7, my iPad and an android Nexus 7. All seems to be ok, with setup being very easy. I decided how I wanted to split off our media and created shares which are basically folders. I was a bit worried as to a previous review on here saying you can't password folders? But you can. All you have to do is make the share/folder NOT public. then you have the option to allow a user to have full read write access, read only or no access. So although not technically pass wording a folder, it does the same thing. If say I want a client to have access to a folder on my cloud I can add the user with a password and then only allow them access to the folder I want them to have access to...simple...
Now I have the basic layout of my folder structure or shares I am just uploading all of my pictures and music. I knew this would take some time as there are a few GB. I am going to eventually connect a second drive to this device and then backup onto that. You can add several drives together, so I will add a drive just for my Time Machine backups and then backup for the cloud itself.
It is a small neat unit and also locks to our security cable on our iMac so if someone breaks in they have to either cut a thick cable or pull the wall apart...

Was very easy to set up and initially worked OK. After 24 hours however started to run slowly transferring data and then failed to appear on network. Despite following online procedures for 2 different reset options it will no longer work. Having to return and can't recommend :(

Either snail pace slow or faulty
Bought this from john Lewis, Cardiff on Sunday 29th June. Initial set up seemed okay, but back up speeds were horrendously slow (estimated time of 1 week to back up my PC). Phoned the helpline and 4 hours later trying to download updated software and changing plugs we were both scratching heads and he conceded it may be faulty, but tried to convince me to download tracking logs to monitor it. Sorry, life is too short. Taking it back next weekend and hopefully exchanging for external hard drives

Very poor indeed
Well what a shock to the system! Having purchased this 3TB product the other day, I have had to reset it every day, it will not allow me access to the Dashboard. Getting hold of Tech Services is not easy, they quote one day, but I'm still waiting. You cannot password each folder as I was told I could and now as I try to access my data, it kindly reports that it "has timed out" yet I'm on a 40MB fibre cable!! Not impressed at all. If this continues to the weekend, I shall be returning the unit to JL.

a big dissappointment
Purchased this as it was supposedly a good product but not the case.The setup is not easy and getting hold of Technical Support was impossible,after 45mins of trying my phone battery died.I tried just about all that is possible but no joy.
Will return unit for refund.
