Wallis viewed his paintings as expressions of his experiences. Unaware of linear perspective, he arranged the objects featured in his paintings, in terms of relative importance, determining their sizes accordingly. Hence, the main subject of a painting would be the largest object depicted, in spite of where it stood in relation to others.
