Bayer is widely recognised as one of the last 'masters' of the Bauhaus; the influential design school founded by Walter Gropius in 1919 at Weimar.

Arriving in New York in 1938 as a refugee from Nazi Germany, he made an immediate impact as the designer of an exhibition on the Bauhaus for the Museum of Modern Art, followed by 2 other exhibitions dealing with the art of World War II.
