The Hobbit Board Game 3.5 5 2 2
great game I really like this game - I bought it for my 13 year old's birthday and we have played it many times (though only ever with 2 or 3 players). It's very original, the rules are pretty straightforward, and I like the way there is a cooperative element as you will need to team up to prevent the Smaug winning. At the same time it is competitive as the player who has won the most jewels at the end game is the winner which encourages you to take risks on the challenges. The game involves a bit of luck with the dice and the dwarf cards but also some skill and strategic thinking. A great game for this age group, (or slightly younger) especially for hobbit and lord of the rings fans. 13 February 2014
Could have been much Better We were given this as a Christmas present. The theme is perhaps the best thing, as it was very appropriate to play this game shortly after our kids saw the film. The oldest has read the book, and like all of us had a positive approach towards this game. Five of us played - after four hours we completed it, and we had had enough for sure. The rules are adequately explained, but it was always going to be a trial the first time. The rules could have been written more clearly on some important points, but we worked it out. Issues:- there are not enough items for 5 players and the game falls short in the rules. We ran out of jewels half way through, and also provision tiles. Not enough in the box - which is poor given the price. In terms of accruing "experience" on your player card - we found players either get to the top quickly and then can accrue no more (which leaves them nothing to do), or they drag along the bottom. Other issues - getting more jewels is the only objective of the game. There is a Smaug dragon piece, but it's fairly irrelevant to the play. There is no story related finale to the game. Basically, if smaug gets to "Lake town" the game ends. This means some players (those doing badly - or very well - depends on which rules you follow) have an incentive to fail in "adventures" to draw the game to an early close (my son thought of this and tried - though my wife and I were temped too!). The construction of the game is - cheap. It's cardboard with some plastic "jewels". None of our kids have wanted to play again...disappointed. 27 January 2013
