Product information

The WaterRower Oxbridge is hand crafted in solid Cherrywood. Like all woods, Cherrywood may vary in colour from a red-brown to deep red. The wood will darken in colour with exposure to light. For this reason all WaterRower Cherrywood components are kept in light free rooms to protect from shadowing. A new WaterRower Oxbridge will therefore appear quite light in colour. The wood will however darken over time reaching a rich reddish hue. Each machine has been hand finished with three coats of Danish Oil giving a deep lustre and warmth to the wood.

Wood has been chosen due to its marvelous engineering properties, primary amongst these is its ability to absorb sound and vibration enhancing the WaterRower's quietness and smoothness of use. The WaterRower has been designed as a natural rowing simulator and is unrivalled in replicating not only the superb physiological dynamics of rowing, but much of the aesthetic pleasure as well, giving the calming feel of a boat gliding down the river. The WaterRower's patented WaterFlywheel utilizes the same physical elements (water) and the same physical dynamics (fluid drag) as occur when a boat moves through water.

Cherrywood, like all woods used in WaterRower construction, is a premium hardwood with incredible longevity and dimensional stability. For reasons of ecology, all WaterRower  woods are harvested from replenishable forests.

Brand Story

WaterRower was founded in 1988 by U.S. national team rower and Yale engineering professor John Duke. Duke’s vision was to create a rowing machine that simulates the resistance and feeling of a rowing boat gliding through the water.

Widely regarded as the most realistic rowing simulator on the market, WaterRower’s unique WaterFlywheel uses water resistance to replicate the dynamics of a moving boat.

All WaterRower machines are handmade in the U.S. at the brand’s New England factory in Warren, Rhode Island, where the company was founded. All wooden models are crafted from the finest Appalachian hardwoods, sourced only from replenishable forests.

WaterRower has won many design accolades for its smart fusion of aesthetics and functionality and has been featured at the London Museum of Design, and New York Museum of Modern Art.

Predominately run by former international elite rowers, WaterRower’s clientele includes Steven Spielberg, actress Anna Friel and Princess Anne and has been featured in hit drama series’ House of Cards and The West Wing.

Q & As

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great home machine If you are thinking of buying one of these rowers you will no doubt be also considering the Concept 2. Both are really good machines with different advantages and disadvantages which are well explained in detail on rowing websites. I am not in any way a competitive rower, I simply wanted to get something to use 2-3 times a week at home which I wouldn't give up on after a month. I am now into my fifth month and still using it, which says it all. For me there were three reasons why I got this instead of the C2. Firstly the sound and feel of the rowing action is much nicer. Secondly it is very easy to move around; on a nice day I can wheel it outside and row on the patio. Finally I think it looks lovely, you could happily keep this in the house, whereas the C2 is an industrial looking piece of gym equipment. The C2 is more solid and feels better engineered, the foot straps and handle are better. To me the rowing mechanism feels different, initially harder to get going but then resistance seems to decrease (unlike the waterrower which increases). This is probably a personal thing but I much prefer the feel of the waterrower, its not easier but its nicer. My times on the C2 are significantly worse than on the WR for what feels like similar effort; my 500 m splits are around 2 min 15 s, whereas on the WR I can maintain 2 mins or below. Does that matter? It may be that the C2 is more realistic and is the better choice for a competitive rower, but for me just trying to get fit it doesn't. I'm sure that if I had got a C2 I would be finding it much harder to motivate myself to use it. I also got the bluetooth heart rate monitor - the internal ANT+ one- its pretty straightforward to fit and works very well. 24 February 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Assemby difficulties I bought this about a month ago. No fixing key came with it (it should have. OK as I had one in a tool kit) and the headset bolts did not secure the footplate. I contacted WaterRower UK and they did as asked and sent new bolts straight away. The fixing is the same and so I now use 3 corn plasters as cushioning to stop the annoying knocking on each stroke. I hope they hold. At this point the row is excellent. 11 March 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by nearly open-air feeling This is a very nice piece of equipment. Apart from giving us an excellent workout opportunity it blends in nicely with the furniture and doesn't look too much like an alien gym-kit. We have put it in the conservatory and with the sky above and the gentle splashing sound of the water this is nearly like rowing on a lake or river. Without the wind and rain of course. 11 May 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent This a pretty pricy machine, but the build quality and everything about it is spot on. If you are looking at the top end of the range, I'd recommend this unreservedly 07 December 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth Motion One of the best rowing machines I have ever used! The only sound you hear when using this Rower is the sound of the water spinning round as you Row. The smooth motion of this Rowing Machine is not just down to the hard cheery wood which takes out any of the vibration, but also down to the build of this great product. The console allow you to see your stroke per minute plus other features .Also stores in an upright position. 10 October 2011
