Q & As

Yamaha YAS-101 7.1 Sound Bar, Black 4.3 5 3 3
Worth every penny. Superb value for money. The IR relay is what makes this unit so easy to set up.The breadth of sound is a vast improvement on my Panasonic 43 inch TV. The surround effect is not much a value as is the enhanced sound spectrum. It took under 5minutes to set up. In my opinion the best value for money spent on the market. 21 April 2013
Not so good sound bar Having done a lot of online research on sound bars I decided this was the one to buy, 5 star reviews were plentiful so I took the plunge. Found the item £50 cheaper at a nearby Hi-Fi store in Chester so John Lewis matched their price no problem. Connected it up to my 40inch Sony Bravia and proceeded to give it a test run on TV programmes, DVD's and Blueray. The claims of Yamaha that this thing gives 7:1 surround sound are wildly outrageous, it will give you a rich bass that your TV speakers can't give, it will pick out background noises that you wouldn't normally here so well on TV programmes, on DVD with Dolby 5:1 sound track it was nothing out of the ordinary, likewise for Blueray. If you've ever owned or had the pleasure of listening to a 5:1 fully wired home theatre system with five satellite speakers and a bass subwoofer then you've heard something really awesome, this sound bar is just not cutting the mustard for me, so if you want a nicely made sound bar that looks good with its piano black finish that enhances the bass tones then by all means buy it, but if you seriously want something to give you any sort of surround sound you'll be very disappointed. 27 November 2012
Yamaha have created an excellent soundbar The soundbar is very easy to connect up, either to the separate devices or direct to your TV. On the front of the soundbar are a series of lights. From left to right they are: Input= This shows which of the connected devices you are listening to. The colour of the light changes, from green when you have the tv as the source, yellow for the STB (set top box), red for the BD/DVD source. Surround= This switches the sound mode from an extended stereo sound, to a realistically sounding surround sound effect using Yamaha's Air Surround Extreme, this is Yamaha's technology to achieve a 7 channel surround sound with only front speakers, and it does not use walls to reflect the sound like some other systems do. Clear Voice= This emphasizes/makes speech/dialogue more easy to listen to. Univolume= The volume level can jump up considerably when the adverts/commercials come on. Univolume stops this phenomena from happening. Dolby Digital/DTS= This lights up green when you are listening to a Dolby Digital source or red when listening to a DTS signal. Dolby Pro Logic/Dolby Pro Logic II= This lights up green when listening to a surround sound source of 2 channel stereo signal input. My first impressions on the Yamaha soundbar were very very impressive. I adjusted the soundbars built in sub woofer level to its maximum setting (this is done via the supplied remote control). I was astonished at how good the sound quality, bass level, surround sound effect was, that I received whilst listening to the music channels and the Blu Ray I tried out with this soundbar. On to my final thoughts now. I find the soundbar to be very good value for money, considering the quality and sound quality of it. I cannot emphasise enough how good this soundbar is, and on what an excellent job Yamaha have done in the quality and choice they have used in the speakers, sub-woofer and the amplification system they have used in this soundbar , go for it, you will not be disappointed. 25 May 2012
