A reproduction print of a nude man standing in profile, originally a sixteenth-century drawing in red chalk by Florentine artist Baccio Bandinelli, from the British Museum. This print comes glazed and framed in an antique black and gold moulding, ready to hang on your wall. The print surface has been carefully finished with artist's acrylic texturing gel, creating a lightly stippled protective glaze.

The original drawing by Bandinelli is a typical example of an 'academy', the name given to a drawing, usually in chalk, which is a finished study from the nude male figure carried out as an end in itself and not preparatory to any picture or sculpture. In an 'academy' the artist strives to render the musculature of the human form as accurately as possible by the careful modulation of light and shade, which in Bandinelli's case gave rise to a certain unwanted glossiness. Such exercises in drawing, first commonly practised in Florence in the sixteenth century, were to become widely diffused and, indeed, continue to the present day. Credit for the invention of the type is often given to Michelangelo. Whether or not this is true, its frequent use by many of his followers and emulators, such as Bandinelli, is noteworthy. Indeed, Bandinelli, a typical academic draughtsman, made a speciality of such drawings which he carried out not just in his favourite medium of red chalk but also in black chalk and in pen and ink. He sometimes introduced 'stage properties' to explain the often extravagant poses adopted by these figures; such is the turfy mound in the present drawing, introduced to support the otherwise impossible stance of the figure.
